This commission is such an original. It makes you wonder at the possibilities of what you could ask for...

A Spider-villains barbeque... lol

Yeah, the mask didn't work at all for me. I'd know that's Robin anywhere!

Of course, I imagine Spider-Man's late because he stopped a robbery on his way, lost the original flowers he bought the 'Cat, and had to swing around for twenty minutes looking for a florist that was open late in Gotham.

His web isn't attached to a building, he's hanging from the BatWing off camera.

Also, Spider-Man's quips and Alfred's dry responses to them add hilarity and joy throughout the dinner.

They are of course celebrating their victory over the Penguin, who hired Rhino and Killer Croc to steal le Diamond de France from the Gotham Museum. Wasn't that bright to hire the two thugs who, er, aren't that bright, because they let the Black Cat infiltrate their team. Turns out the diamond was actually for Mr Freeze, who wanted to create a powerful new set of four freezing blasters for his good friend Doc Ock's arms.

Don't even get me started on how Batman managed to stop Ock while Spider-Man dealt with Freeze and Croc. Catwoman managed to save the Black Cat and the two tag-teamed Rhino, but Penguin got away...

...or would have if an errant Freeze beam hadn't iced him while Spider-Man dogged Mr Freeze' attacks.

Man, this is the most fun comic I've read all year!

What's everyone else got?

I like that you can tell that Spider-Man is smiling under the mask.

JB, when it comes to commissions, when somebody just asks for certain characters but does not specify which costumes to use (like I did), do you ask for clarification or do you go with your own preferences?

Even in their downtime you can see the Byrne magic in these characters. Bravo sir.

If there are several iterations of a character, I will ask if the customer wants something specific. If not, I will do my own preferance or, as here, one that best suits the "mood" of the piece. Like -- if you had not asked for the all-black Batman in your piece, Vinny, that's almost certainly what you would have gotten, since the Batman we see here would not have suited the mood you wanted.

That's part of what makes this particular piece work -- the Batman I chose is of a vintage -- early Neal Adams -- who would go out on a "date" like this.

You know. For the five thousandth time… this guy…

...in the CD player sounds either Batdance or Spider-Man by Ramones

And thank you for the explanations about perspective and cityscapes.

Makes perfect sense. I couldn't imagine Miller's prostitute-Catwoman in this piece, for instance.

That's fantastic work!  I always got a kick out of the episodes of the old Batman TV show where Alfred would wear a mask.  Great stuff!
