Ah, Namor, you old smoothie! This was a great issue. Started off with an intelligent premise, based on previously established MU continuity, and just took right off from there. JB managed to re-invent Namor without simply ignoring all that had gone before. Excellent.

Welcome to the Namor edtion of the JBF Reading Club. Namor was my first John Byrne comic I collected because he was working on it. It came out as part of Marvel's 'Heroes for the 90's' wave of comics. Along with New Warriors, Ghost Rider and others.

Great first issue. Gives us a retelling of Namor's origin and adds on to it. Meanwhile takes Namor in a totally different direction for stories and introduces several new characters. All in one issue. Imagine if they tried that these days. It'd take 4-6 issues, minimum.

Question for JB. What was the inspiration for starting the series and for having the corporate element added to the mix?

Ahhh.  Namor #1.  I never really cared for the character all that much.  villain?  Hero?  But, with JB as the writer/artist I picked up Namor #1 and enjoyed JB's entire run.  He gave us an explanation of Namor's flip-flopping between hero and bad guy.  Making Namor part of the business world...Great first issue!

Good call, Trevor! This series is spectacular!

BTW, I always wondered why Namor's courtship of "Miss Alexander" was cut
short... In fact, father and daughter didn't last long in the series, did they?
IIRC, in ish #1 Mr. Alexander tells his story and it's one of the best "little
biographies" JB has done. With this kind of set-up, I was expecting they'd
have a more prominent role as supporting characters.

This was a very hard issue to grab scans from. Not that there weren't good ones. In fact it was quite the opposite! So many pages propel the story and characters along. I had to decide on pages that show the direction of the series. It is one jammed pack opening issue.
