Is Mike Machlan still working in comics at all? I always liked his inks.

He was a great penciller as well. Check out his Infinity, Inc. covers

Great issue, really enjoy the build up of the story, and the Wanda finally finding the Vision is just a sweet scene (though tragic, of course).

The final shot of the issue with the Vision in pieces and stretched out all over the table might be my favorite Byrne image.  JB, did it take any extra work for you to figure out how you wanted to pull that shot off?

Nope. Stuff like that -- what I call argle-bargle -- is
amongs the easiest things to draw.

Noooo!! Now I had to watch the Vision die twice! Darn it!

Is it just me, or do the colors on Hawkeye look "off" on page 13? I'm
commenting on "off-colors" in a comic book...sheesh!

Except for Wonder-man's hairstyle this is timeless stuff. I love how "Big" Mockingbird and Hawkeye's masks are. Hank Pym is a strange character during West Coast Avengers (which was my introduction to him) he's a great guy. But every other book has cast him as an utter schmuck.

Love this issue...how both Jan and Hank, both being former leaders, naturally tell people what to do and not even notice it is pissing Hawkeye off. Well done character interaction JB...this is why I read comics

Yep, this is truly a cliassic.

Not sure what JB meant by his faces comment, but the characterization and emotion in this issue especially are truly excellent.

And JB's ability to draw techie bric-a-brac including the dis-assembled Viz is unsurpassed.

Dunno if I'd say "unsurpassed", but it sure has been a long road, getting from there to here. The recent Champions commission, which compelled me to pull out my bound copies and really look at them, reminded me of just how sparse and, well, lame my tech stuff used to be. In no small part that was because of something I have mentioned before -- that I used to do really detailed layouts before tightening my pencils, and that knocked a lot of the spontenaity out of the argle-bargle. And when it comes to argle-bargle, spontenaity is one of the most important elements.

Still -- thanks anyway!

After Roger Stern left the Avengers, the main title just deteriorated and lost its "Avengerness."  Despite some problems I had with Englehart's run, I truly enjoyed that the West Coast Avengers had a real longstanding core of heroes.  They were writing their own mythos as it were.  One large part of that is the way Hawkeye - a character who was one key to the identity of the Avengers - had developed as their leader.  After years of being the utility player, he was finally allowed to lead and did a good job at it.  Whether or not he was a "natural" leader or not, he personified the Avengers' spirit.  Much like how the Wasp's leadership in Stern's run was unexpected, but also in character.

Hawkeye had been the WCA Chairman for 50 issues now (43 plus the limited series plus appearances in the Avengers titles before the regular series began).  I had no problem with Hawk stepping down so another could show their stuff.  But I think it could have been done a bit more respectfully.  Hawkeye's leadership is no more surprising than the Wasp's.

Great fun with the issue as always though.
