Used to read Firestorm in the b/w Swedish anthology title "Gigant" when I was a kid. Would've been fun to see what JB would've done with the character. Especially seeing how great this image looks. Another happy customer on the other end of that commission I would think.

What a surprise! I like it when people request characters we don't often see.

Firestorm was Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein up until John Ostrander took over the writing chores.

Gerry Conway before he left the title with issue # 53 had Prof. Stein developing an incurable brain tumour.

Ostrander developed a storyline where Ronnie and Martin wanted to do soemthing important before Stein died, and decided to rid the world of all nuclear weapons.

This brought them in to conflict with the American and Soviet Governments and in turn the Justice League and Suicide Squad to stop them.

Eventually Firestorm defeats these teams and is left face-to-face with Pozhar (Mikhail Arkadin) a Russian super-hero in the Nevada desert. As Firestorm and Pozhar are fighting a nuclear weapon is launced to finish them off.

The bomb detonates and re-aligns the Firestorm Matrix so that now Ronnie and Mikhail are the internal voices, but Firestorm now has his own personality which turns out to be an amnesiac Martin Stein (who survived the blast and had his tumour burnt away) whose mind leaves his body to becoem the Firestorm persona.

This Firestorm finds itself in a battle with a Russian clone and Mikhail and Ronnie realise that to defeat it they have to fuse with the clone permanently. This happens and Firestorm is revelaed as Earth's Fire Elemental,

Eventually it is discovered Stein was meant to be Firestorm on his own, and it is arranged for this to happen and Mikhail and Ronnie are freed.

That was the end of Firestorm at issue 100, anyone else know what happened since then?

Great piece by the way, JB.

Firestorm's look has also changed many many times, and I ALWAYS prefer the version JB has treated to us here.  Wasn't there a female version at one point, Firebird?

I love love love the dramatic lighting on this piece!! Visually, I always thought Firestorm was a cool character, now he's even cooler!!

Here's to JB's new commissions (as I raise my cup of coffee in JB's honor)!

It was an issue of SWAMP THING that featured the (then) JLA that cued me to
thinking of Firestorm's topknot as a light source. Makes sense.

I thought for sure it would be the Human Torch by the title, what a nice surprise.
