but his face wasn't scared -- so I thought it was Kristoff (thinking he was Doom)

 QUOTE:
Walt Simonson did an interesting follow-up to that storyline, I think, in which Doom went up against an army of his former Doombots that had been reprogrammed by Kristoff to be wary of Victor since his reported demise in JB's classic FF260 tale. Dr. Doom prevailed and took back over his kingdom and seal of Latveria.

Yeah, I seem to remember that now.  Seems somewhat similar to JB's intent.

The other Doombots immediately bowed to the true Doom. While the Doombot that thought he was doom attacked the true Dr.Doom in a rage and was instantly destroyed. Doom then said he would later study it to see what caused the malfunction.

I thought Doom did plan for the robots to do to Kristoff what they did.  The only difference is that Doom did it assuming he had somehow died, and did as a contingency plan.  Doom might be too arrogant to think he would die, but it's still plausible.

However, Doom didn't die, so the robots screwed up.  And when Doom gets frustrated, he doesn't think things through.  For all his reason, he gets overwhelmed by his emotions.

JB's revelation fits within what I thought would happen once Doom returned.

"Dolt of a robot! How could you be so foolish as to believe that a mere exploding herald of Galactus could cause the death of DOOM?!"

Hm. If Doom himself hadn't laid the groundwork for Kristoff's transformation, how did his memories come to be stored in the brainwashing technology that the Doombots used? I guess I have a logical theory, but maybe JB can tell us what he had in mind first?

Now I'd really love to see JB return to the FF to give a "director's cut" of his run, getting rid of the crossover events, finishing the Kristoff story, and having an actual ending to his run on FF.

What do you think, JB?

Doom laid down the groundworks of the contingency plan, but he did not
have Kristoff in mind for the vessel. Even Doom is not so cruel that he
would do that to a child.

Yeah, switching minds with Norman McArthur (and thus condemning McArthur to death) is one thing, but brainwashing an innocent boy he'd "adopted" (and was apparently grooming as a genuine heir, as opposed to "Doom, Jr.") is something else.

Looking back, it seems that Kristoff was the "replacement" character for Old Boris who was another loyal, vulnerable (because he was old), dependent that Doom was sentimentally attached to.  Doom could never have a friend because friendship requires equality, but he could be a benevolent patron assuming the people knew their place.

Ah. Well that makes perfect sense. Thank you very much for the explanation.I was thinking that maybe that technology was what he'd used to train his Doombots, since they all believed that they were Doom when not in his presence.

I wonder (and I know that there may be no answer to this), did Doom have somebody in particular in mind for the role?

edited to add the word "the"

Reminds me of one of the few good parts of Claremont's run on Fantastic Four, which was the revelation that Doom's armor is programmed to write Doom's thought patterns on the brain of anyone other than Doom who wears it. Which is, since Doom's armor is only going to be worn by someone else in the case of his defeat, he'd win even in death.
