I have been labouring under a *huge* misconception then!
I've been away from buying monthlies for a loooooong
time, and I just assumed that the "all star" referred to
having the biggest of big name creators on the flagship
characters - a completely understandable marketing
strategy!

"All-Star", as in the original title from when the name springs, was
supposed to refer to the characters.

Then the (crappy) retailers will be complaining about how they are losing money by not having copies of the book to sell in the shops to their customers. You know...because they HAD to put the "error" copies up on eBay.
I wonder how many of these guys filled their customers pre-orders first before putting up any extra copies on eBay? I'm sure the vast majority of them just said "Sorry, but I can get you he second printing in a few weeks! Unless you have a few hundred bucks...then I might be able to locate a copy."

Oh, but they couldn't do that! After DC issued a recall, selling those
copies to the customers who actually ordered them would be
dishonest!

Wasn't "All-Star" supposed to refer to the characters in their stripped down, most iconic form? The way the public generally perceives them?

Wow. From the look of the pages I saw, even without the swearing (which is of course totally insane) that's an ugly, ugly script... they're talking about raping and stabbing Batgirl, for God's sakes... an underaged girl.
What is this shit?
This incident seems to me to be a vindication of many of the beliefs that JB has shared on this forum, regarding the direction that the comic book industry has taken over the past few years.

Okay, let's look at this realistically.
Miller and Lee have 2 more issues to get to #12. DC has already put out a
hardcover collection of the first 6 issues. The people who bought that
first hardcover, especially the folks who are only reading the story in that
specific format, are going to want and expect a second volume, especially
since the first volume doesn't have a real ending--it doesn't finish the
overall story that Miller is telling.
So it's not in DC's best interests at this time to dump Miller--they've got
to get those two last issues out of him for the second hardcover
collection. Bringing in another writer to finish Miller's story is just not an
option. They'd be crazy to consider it. (I just hope, for DC's sake, that
Miller's story actually CONCLUDES in #12--if it goes beyond 12 issues, I'd
say they're pretty well f*%@ed in terms of ever being able to collect this
thing in its entirety.)
Also, the editor of the book is an old colleague of Miller's--in fact, it was
this editor's arrival at DC that helped open the door for Miller to come
back to do DK2 and the ALL-STAR title. So removing the editor--who
does have to bear at least partial responsibility for this situation--may
simply not be an option, as such a move could alienate Miller and thus
cause even further delays.

Questions for JB, as he's "in the know," at least to some degree...
...So, what IS DC editorial & marketing's general opinion of this book?
Was this the book they believed they would be getting from Frank Miller?
Was he given carte blanche without editorial interference to do whatever he wants, and thus DC's hands are cuffed from requesting changes?
Everyone continues to rail against FM but unless things have completely changed creative does what editorial says, not the other way around. So would that mean that this series is being supported from business levels above Bob Schreck's head?
