I ask this fully expecting you to say you don't remember, but hey, can't hurt to ask...

Way back in the long ago time, when you were doing WW, and active in the old forums on DC Online on AOL, your cover for WW #109 was posted as a teaser for the issue.  Folks on the forum were abuzz because based on the costume, we took it to be Barry Allen.  Somebody (might've been me, don't remember) posted that they doubted it was Barry, because Mark Waid (who was on Flash at the time) had said that he didn't want Barry brought back, and if it did happen, it wouldn't be in Wonder Woman.  At the time, you responded (cryptically) that you had thought of a way to bring Barry back which even Waid would think was good.

So, since DC has now brought Barry back, and you're thus safe from them stealing your idea, and if you remember it, what was it?

Simple, really. It's very, very, very hard to "kill" a character who can travel in
Time. How old was Barry when he "died" in CRISIS? For all we know, he
could have been 106.

My idea was to simply have Barry pop into existence in the "current" DCU,
returning from one of his trips thru time to find he'd "missed his target"
because of disruptions caused by CRISIS. He would then live out whatever
life (nature and duration) the Powers that Be would allow.

(I also had an idea that, since Wally was being The Flash, Barry would take on
another identity for a while, knowing that sooner or later he had to go die in
CRISIS. But when the moment came, Wally would bushwhack him, take his
place, and that would actually have been Wally we saw die.)

That, actually, would have been an awesome twist, and a good way around the 'Flash Family' bloat that DC is now suffering.

Thanks for answering so quickly, JB.  I've literally been walking around with that nagging at the back of my brain for 13 years, and now that Rebirth #1 is out, I had to ask.

...and yes, I know I'm OCD.

Since The Flash regularly time traveled to visit his In-Laws (The Wests of the future), there are / were any number of opportunities for him to come back at the wrong time, a very simple and elegant solution.  I also like the Wally West angle.

That was very similar to Marv Wolfman's solution.

Yes. Marv revealed in the TPB of Crisis that he left a loophole to bring Barry Allen back, which involved Barry's final run through time to save the universe being interrupted and him ending up in the present, having adventures but knowing that eventually he'd be pulled back to the moment of his demise and have to sacrifice himself to save the universe.
