If that decision came down from editorial, how much blame would you place for this "problem" on the writer?

I drop 98.9% on editorial/management. Even if the writer walks in, jumps up
and down and holds his breath, it's editorials responsibility.

I agree with this 100%. If you're putting your name, and your professional reputation, nay, your professional future on it, it had better be something you believe is your best work, and best for you to continue working. I guess at that point, when editorial walks in and says "Kill Barry" I might feel like looking elsewhere for that next check.

For some reason I was looking at this from the pointof view of the writer walking in and saying " I wanna kill Barry", and I'd still blame editorial if it went to print, although I might not like the writer so much afterwards.

I guess the true injustice is the public may never hear that it was handed down from high, and the writer may be incorrectly blamed.

Heck, anyone who likes Kang knows how much fun you can have with a time traveling character. It's really surprising that everyone viewed Barry's death with such closure to the character, when he could pop up at any given moment.

I think Barry had become perceived as such a boring character (although not to me <g>) mired in such a horrible storyline (his trial), that readers accepted Wally in the role easily. At the same time, I have a feeling DC editorial wanted lasting repercussions for their big Event, so Barry unfortunately had to stay 'gone'.

Uh, I hate to jump on the other side of the fence, but Barry was boring. He was one of those one dimensional characters best left in the ether.

Rob Liefeld can't draw, but that doesn't mean every idea he's ever had was bad.  Deadpool is a great character (though admittedly different than his intent, but that's pretty much the point, good writers have made him an interesting character).  And, actually, if he had been allowed to do with Cable what he originally wanted, that could've been interesting too...

...well, if a good writer had been allowed to use his original idea, it would have been interesting.

I kinda liked the Trial of Barry Allen, though.  But, to everyone saying that Barry was boring, I don't think you've read enough Silver Age DC.  Barry had the exact same personality that every other DC Hero had.  He just never got the O'Neil/Adams treatment that Superman, Batman, GL, GA, and Wonder Woman (well, WW got O'Neil at least) had had.  And since he got killed in Crisis, he didn't get a Byrne/Miller/Perez/Grell revamp like the others on that list.
