Maybe Rogue got frightened by Darkseid.  That's how the second Invisible Kid from the Legion of Super-Heroes got the white stripe in the middle of his hair!

Not sure if the rogue-gallery.com site is still active for the OP but good ol' Adam Hughes is always worth posting for eye-candy alone.

I don't know about that, but the two renderings look like two entirely different people. The top one looks like it was modeled off of Vanessa Ferlito (from DEATH PROOF).

Dying white stripes in your hair might have been "punkish"
in 1980, but now it would seem ridiculous.

Rogue doesn't care for your definition of "fashion". But seriously, you've ever seen emo teens?

[quote]for what it's worth, those "unpublished" issues of Ms. Marvel were eventually published in those quarterly MARVEL SUPER-HERO SPECIALS used to clear out the inventory files.[quote]

Since it was not published before and then published twice after Dazzler's series, it makes it TRIPLE canon.

But why do they override the DAZZLER issues?

Rogue is a character I disliked at first but who eventually grew on me. However, I've always felt she needs a better code-name, because when I hear the word "rogue" I think of someone who sneaks around with a dagger picking pockets, committing burglaries and backstabbing people or swings around on a rope on a pirate ship and gets into fencing duels.

She's also had some of the worst costumes I've ever seen, unfortunately.

I can't really say the character ever spoke to me. I don't really have a problem with the name, though. It's fairly descriptive of her powers.

••

Rogue is one more example of how the Stan Lee school of naming has shriveled and died at Marvel. Instead of characters with names like Quicksilver and Medusa, which have nothing really to do with their powers but tell you instantly who they are when they're on camera, we have names like Rogue and Shatterstar that have nothing to do with their powers -- or anything else.

I recall Stan being confused as to who the "new" X-Men were when the team was first introduced. Based on their names he guessed Storm was Banshee and Nightcrawler was Wolverine. Perfectly logical guesses, really, if you start with the assumption that the name is going to help you pick the character out of the group.

Steals other's powers by making physical contact with them.

Somehow that doesn't say "Rogue" to me. (For me, Len Wein's "parody" of
Rogue, Touch'n'Go was perfect.)

This thread is reminding me of a conversation I had with an editor up at DC during the days I was doing DOOM PATROL. "Do you have any plans for Madame Rogue?" he asked.

"Rouge," I said.

"What?"

"Her name is Madame Rouge. You know. Like make-up?"

He stared at me blankly for a while, then tromped off to the bound volumes room. A while later he came back with the first appearance of the character.

"It's Madame Rouge," he said. "All these years I've been saying Madame Rogue!"

I smiled. "The English language can be our friend!"
