Hi JB,

There's a big fuss this week over the remodelling of Amanda Waller in the DCNu52 version of Suicide Squad. Basically she's been slimmed down to a sexy younger woman. One image I've seen online clearly contains nippleage (I haven't read the issue & likely won't considering the travesty that is Harley Quinn's new costume).

My question is, as you were the artist on the Legends miniseries where the character made her debut, did you come up with her original design?

Color me stunned.

I did not design Amanda, however. I was told by editorial to model her on Nell Carter.

Everyone knows heavy-set people don't exist and that we are all models.

Hollywood lead the way on this one, with Waller being
portrayed by Pan Grier on Smallville and Angela Bassett in
Green Lantern.

The Waller on Justice League Unlimited was great though.

The Wall is a great character. Her new look (as well as Harley and Deadshot) is one main reason I have no interest in the new Suicide Squad.

I can definitely see Nell Carter in the original Wall.

The version voiced by CCH Pounder in Justice League Unlimited was sensational. I wouldn't mess with her! She even got an action figure - a woman of color & size in business attire. You don't see that every day Chauncy.

Hurgh! This is one of my biggest pet peeves in comics. I'd be thrilled for someone in real life who slimmed down after wanting too, but it's just so tacky in comics. Just like creators can't wait to make ugly tweens into bodacious college girls. It's like they can't relate to a female other than for that purpose, you know.

The change to Harley reminds me of when Frank Miller was talking about giving the Joker a mohawk and a one-piece jumpsuit -- ie, it abandons, forgets, or perhaps never really knew why the character is called what s/he is called.

Nothing about Harley's new look evokes a harlequin.

(Incidentally, if you really want to ruin your day, week, month, possibly life, Google "harlequin disease.")

Absolutely!  CCH Pounder herself would have made a PERFECT Amanda Waller for the Green Lantern movie.  When I see her as Mrs. Frederick on Warehouse 13, It's virtually the exact same character.  It's a shame that apparently DCU women have to now all be built like Wilma Flintstone.

She now looks like poorly conceived SAILOR MOON villain. I flipped thru that book out of sheer curiosity at the LCS and this is not a shining moment for her.  How on earth has she gone from a fully-clothed fun character to a scantily clad S&M fetishist?  Is this really what Dini had in mind?

Follows the pattern set by Miller with Catwoman.
