Ah, yes.  The prostitutization of Selina Kyle*.  DC's very own Mary Magdalene.

*What a perfect title for a book railing against the child-unfriendly astmosphere of comics.  Like SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT, in reverse.

The real crime in the changes Frank worked in Catwoman, of course (as I have mentioned elsewhere), lies in the fact that he made them without knowing they were changes. As Peter Sanderson reported in an interview, Frank was unaware that Catwoman HAD an origin, and thought he was giving her one. (Mind you, the one he gave her was completely at odds with any portrayal of the character we had ever seen before, so not knowing the origin was only a tiny part of the problem.)

It was also Frank who transformed Alfred into the "old family retainer" (as well as a clone of John Gielgud in ARTHUR), and knocked ten or twenty years off Gordon's age, both contrary to established lore. (It was a "cascade" effect that turned Barbara into Gordon's adopted daughter, too.)

It was something to see, at the time! While Superman fans howled like scalded cats at every comma I changed in the Man of Steel's mythos, there seemed hardly a squeak from Bat-fans as Frank turned over every apple cart in sight!

Mmm, maybe Batfans were more open to it because of the O'Neil/Adams run.

Also potentialy they weren't exactely the same public.

Before your run i wasn't much a fan of the Superman comics, my Superman was the one from the Christopher Reeve movies.

On another had i was a fan of the Len Wein Batman. (And also liked stories by Marv Wolfman or Denny O'Neil). With Irv Novick & Don Newton art.

Same thing with Batgirl & Supergirl: I loved both the Batgirl character and her adventures, i loved the Supergirl character, but exactly as for Superman, i was bored by her stories.

Neal and Denny told more bold and dynamic stories than we had seen in BATMAN comics for a long while, but they didn't actually CHANGE anything. The characters were still who they had always been.

Hanging on the wall of my Studio, I have a two page sequence from Denny and Neal's run -- from the first Ra's al Ghul story, presenting a retelling of Batman's origin, along with his first meeting with Dick Grayson. No only is it completely true to all that had been established before, in one panel Neal even "swipes" Bob Kane -- who was himself swiping Hal Foster. Now THAT'S fidelity!

Yes, but there's a change of tone.

Batman becomes darker and a few thing like Batwoman are treated in a way that may be interesting for the story but is way worse than anything you did to Super-monkey or whatever it (and other characters like it) are called.

Now Batwoman was more than a monkey, i'm not... what i am saying is that none of them was a central element of the mythos.

Amanda Waller looks more like Rosario Dawson than she does Ms. Bassett. Still...an unnecessary change that doesn't really add anything to the character.

Hurgh! This is one of my biggest pet peeves in comics. I'd be thrilled
for someone in real life who slimmed down after wanting too, but it's
just so tacky in comics. Just like creators can't wait to make ugly
tweens into bodacious college girls. It's like they can't relate to a
female other than for that purpose, you know.
----------------

Is this, in part, the same reason Peter Parker and Reed Richards
suddenly developed muscles? They couldn't accept a punny looking
man?

(Under O'Neil and Adams) Batman becomes darker…
