Over the years I have made a point to tell young wannabe artists to concentrate on learning to draw cars and streets and offices and houses. As I tell them, we can teach chimps to draw guys in skintight suits, but the real world is harder!

The inevitable complaint is “That stuff is boring!” to which I reply SO KEEP DOING IT UNTIL IT ISN’T!!!

I agree that it can be less fun to draw, but the payoff for the reader is more than worth it. Also, in scenes where ice cream shops turn to battlefields, you can use all of that collateral to make it even more “grounded” in the real world.

A great example of this was FF259-260, where a fight between Johnny, Ben, and Tyros takes briefly in a supermarket, spilling into the parking lot.  You never knew what to expect from the next JB fight scene, but none took place in some non-descript void.  You always gave us a real world, and it makes all the difference.  Kudos!

To help out, certainly, but this is still the X-Men's book!

Today's action-packed page further confirms my unspoken suspicions (Yay! I finally got one right), and raises a new one. I also see that the winsome wasp refuses to be denied! *chortle*

JB, having the ship come in at an angle like that brings so much added visual interest to the page. Is this scene one that "fell out of the pencil" for you?

I'm a broken record when I say I wasn't expecting that!!! Nightcrawler as a Sentinel that is cool. Now how do you fight with your friends inside?!?!

The art stellar as always!

Pretty much. I didn't use a 3D model of the quinjet, so I had to figure out the angles the old fashioned way, but since I actually designed* this version, way back when, that was not as hard as it might have been.

-------------------

* I've mentioned before that I had to draw a quinjet in an issue of AVENGERS, but had no reference. Mark Gruenwald told me to just make one up, so I did. Much to my gratification, my design became the go-to version for other artists for years after.

Jan is small enough to board the Quinjet undetected.  :-)

Yes, but I found choreographing the fight scenes that she quickly got lost in the shuffle, so decided to leave her out. Now, I suppose, there will be those who grumble that she isn't featured since she's obviously there.
