These demons (like the Sentinels) really do lend themselves to getting the crap kicked out of them / being ripped apart visually.

Every once in a while it’s good to have villains that evoke no sympathy. That’s one reason the Nazis are such great bad guys.

JB - all things being equal, would you rather draw a page like today (i.e. viscera/gore), or typical superhero "everyone is OK" punching?

I might be wording this poorly.

JB: Methinks you mean the omniscient narrator!

You are absolutely right, sir! Thanks for the correction.

Technically the Narrator—ie the Writer—IS omnipotent, since s/he controls all that happens in a story, but if s/he’s doing the job properly, the readers should not notice this!

(Something upon which I have commented before: there were/are so many readers who treated the characters as if they were real living people, yet any time something BAD happened to those characters those readers always knew who to BLAME!)

Loved the Shaman pages - I don't feel you could just sub in, say, Dr. Strange, and have the same story.  That is how to use characters imo - too often you see all magic characters acting pretty much the same - sub in any for any other, likewise with speedsters, flying bricks, etc.  But a good writer finds a way to make each unique in their own way beyond costume and name.

The drapery and shading on Xavier in the fourth panel keeps pulling my
eyes there.

Agreed- there's great textures in this black and white art that probably would get lost if it were inked and colored.

Even tho I drew it, I find my own eyes are pulled to the demon's neck. One of those instances where I wasn't really paying attention as I drew, and that's what "fell out of the pencil". No idea where it came from.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Agreed. The neck is very creature-cool.

Kitty floating. Xavier in action. Wonderful!

I’ll mention here that I have long ago stopped penciling ELSEWHEN with any thought to these pages ever being inked. (Apologies to those who might try!)

What’s coming along these days is a kind of fusion of my old time full pencils, and the fully rendered pages I produced for BLOOD AND TRENCHES.

Mine too. That panel's a beauty, from Kitty and Heather to Xavier to the demon and its hideous neck.

****

And it looks amazing! The final pencil look is so satisfying and has a depth that the inks lack.

If we are going to have a webcomic, the pencils provide a sort of texture to the art that counterbalances the cold glass of a computer screen. One of the few digital books that feels like a real book!
