Wolverine definitely appears to be the rougher type that I first was introduced to when reading "Uncanny X-Men" -- and for me that's a great thing! I often told my friends that the Wolverine of the Frank Miller drawn mini-series, while cool in his own right, was not the same guy in the older X-Men issues that I really liked. The older characterization was more wild, hair-triggered, and dangerous (yes, BOTH were deadly, but the older version was more threatening).
I like straight and narrow, real hero types like Superman and Cyclops (when he is written correctly), but even as a kid I dug Wolverine for his contrast to that image. I never admired or wanted to be like him, but I appreciated the dynamic he brought to the team, and in the 1970s, there was NO other superhero really like him.
Oh, and nice touch to have him smoking again. That's something that Marvel has forbade in the comics for years, but to me adds to his character. I am not a smoker, never have been, and don't condone it, but it seems silly to worry about showing a character with razor-sharp claws and a known killing streak influencing kids to smoke. I discovered Wolverine when I was a kid and never felt compelled to smoke because he did in the comics.
