I tend to avoid getting involved in political threads, and this really isn't meant to be one, but it was a political post by Republican loser Madison Cawthorn that made me think of the topic for this thread. In his whiny post after losing his primary run, Cawthorn wrote, " It's time for the rise of the new right, it's time for Dark MAGA to truly take command."

The use of the work "dark" here is interesting, because it's typically used to denote the corruption of something. MAGA is already corrupt, as it is, but I digress. It did make me wonder about the origin of using "dark" before a name, like this. Dark Phoenix naturally comes to mind. I don't recall hearing/reading "dark" used in that manner before the classic comic book story by JB and Chris Claremont, or maybe I'm forgetting something?

Was "dark" used in this manner before Dark Phoenix, where the word "dark" is placed before a name to suggest a corrupt or more sinister version of a person (or thing)?

The first thing I thought of when I saw Cawthorn’s comment was that he’s
too big a Chris Claremont fan.

When Chris told me that he intended to add “Dark” to underscore the transformation of Phoenix (still entirely Jean at that point) my first thought was of dark chocolate.

Can’t say I was ever really crazy about the name.

That’s giving him too much credit for reading. Cawthorn didn’t invent DarkMAGA. It’s been trending for a couple of months now.

Why did Phoenix even have to have a name change? When he made
Magneto into a good guy, his name didn’t change to Bright Magneto. Rogue
wasn’t Light Rogue.

I think "Dark Ages" refers more to how the Vatican kept the general population dumbed down for that period. As in "kept in the dark" .

Hmm, now that I think of it that is kind of sinister isn't it

There is some evidence that the Dark Ages actually were DARK. Volcanic eruptions throwing a "doomsday shroud" around the Earth for years.

••

Coincidentally, I was thinking that just this morning.

Isn't Sauron "the Dark Lord of Mordor"?
