Simple one. Choose 5 runs on Iron Man that you enjoyed the most.

Mine:

  • David Michelinie / Bob Layton / John Romita, Jr. / Jerry Bingham / Mark Bright / Jackson Guice (I'm including the Michelinie and Layton runs as one, as they basically picked up from where they left off on their return in 1986)
  • Archie Goodwin and George Tuska
  • Len Kaminski, Kevin Hopgood and Tom Morgan
  • Kurt Busiek and Sean Chen + Roger Stern
  • John Byrne, John Romita, Jr. and Paul Ryan

Mine are the same as yours, Greg, except I'd replace the Kaminski/Hopgood/Morgan run with Stan Lee/Gene Colan. I considered Denny O'Neill/Luke McDonnell run because those issues were my entry into collecting Iron Man but Tony Stark was out of the armor for too long.

Not being a character I’ve ever had a lot of interest in outside of The Avengers, I’ve only ever read JB’s issues and the first Essential volume with Tales of Suspense. I do love that Don Heck art!

Shawn, I first started IM with the O'Neill / McDonnell run, but when I look back on it now the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. For better or worse the 4 main things Denny brought were:

  • Tony Stark's alcoholism being portrayed more realistically than the "very special episode" resolution Michelinie and Layton brought to it. I know Denny had first hand experience of this illness, so Tony's fall and learning to control his illness was a good storyline.
  • Putting James Rhodes in the armour. A major turning point and was a huge deal at the time. Even though we know it will be eventually reversed, it does lead to Rhodey becoming War Machine so this arc leaves a permanent and significant mark.
  • The introduction of the red and silver (Silver Centurion) armour. One of my personal favourites, and another significant change in the character.
  • Obadiah Stane as an enemy for Tony Stark / Iron Man over a 4 year period.
The overall thing is Denny O'Neil's run on Iron Man is a bit uneven. Some issues are poor, and some are good. It doesn't help that outside of Stane and The Mandarin storyline, the villains Denny used were weak to extremely lame and poor.

While Denny's run prior to issue 200 is uneven and just not fun, with the dozen issues or so he still has before Michelinie/Layton return though, with Tony back as IM are very, very good.

The Silver Centurion armour turned out to be very overpowered story-wise early on. Michelinie/Layton would end up powering it down just enough to return it to a good level for fights with villains.

I've read every Iron Man story from Suspense #39 to the end of the Gillian run and he seems to be a hard character to write consistently well.  These five were pretty easy to pick, but if you had wanted us to go to 10 (or even 6), it could've been tricky for me.

1) Michelinie/Layton/Romita/others (1st run)
2) Michelinie/Layton/Bright/Guice/others (2nd run)
3) JB/Romita/Ryan
4) Stan Lee/Heck/Colan
5) Archie Goodwin/Colan/Tuska

David Michelinie and Bob Layton first run, with John romita Jr, and on occasion Jerry Bingham and John Byrne.

John Byrne with John Romita Jr and Paul Ryan.

David Michelinie and Bob Layton second run with Mark Bright (I like less the later part of that run, even if i like Jackson Guice a lot.)

Stan Lee with Don Heck and Gene Colan

Archie Goodwin and various, amongst which George Tuska.

Bill Mantlo with George Tuska.

Solid points, Greg! Funny how I thought the move to Rhodey being Iron Man was permanent at first. McDonnell's artwork took a while to get used to but he would become, in my opinion, the perfect artist for the Suicide Squad. I enjoyed Bright's artwork, even more so when Layton inked him on the second Michelinie/Layton run.

Hey, can anyone help me with identifying an Iron Man story?

I recall reading a really good story where Iron Man battles the Mandarin. In the story, the Mandarin uses each of rings to attack Iron Man, and may have been operating from a base on an island. I believe the story was drawn by Jack Kirby, but I read it so long ago that I may be wrong.
