So, I don't want this to be a morbid post, but it occurred to me while looking at the latest issue of FANTASTIC FOUR. There's a tribute to Paul Neary in the front, and they used six covers in the profile, as a celebration of his career.

JB, what six covers would you choose to sum up your career?

Everyone else - what six covers would you choose?

In the example, they used all Marvel books, but I think for this exercise, lets open it up to every company.

Well, I'll take a crack at John Byrne in six covers...

Doomsday +1 #4
Iron Fist #8
X-Men #114
Fantastic Four #236
Man Of Steel #1 (Special ed.)
X-Men: The Hidden Years #22

Totally my own biases reflected, and I didn't get a Spider-Man cover in (would have with seven covers but decided Superman had to be there).

I'll stick with Marvel for my choices:

Alpha Flight 5
FF 236
X-Men 141
Peter Parker 101
Wolverine 17
Captain America 253

(Submitted with the understanding that JB does not consider covers to be such a big deal compared to the story-telling that goes on inside a comic book):

X-Men #141
Fantastic Four #243
Generations 3 #10
Blood of the Demon #4
Star Trek New Visions #14
X-Men Elsewhen Cover (a modied X-Men commission that JB said would serve well as a cover)

6 covers is not enough for a writer/artist who made giant breakthroughs on every book he touched! (And I find I do not know issue #s as good as I thought I did!)

SILVER SURFER #1 (with Tom Palmer)
X-MEN #135 (with Terry Austin)
ALPHA FLIGHT #3
FANTASTIC FOUR #236 (with Terry Austin)
X-MEN: THE HIDDEN YEARS #1
NAMOR #12

I would say the SILVER SURFER cover is my favorite overall.

There’s much more Tom than me in that Surfer cover!

When I saw that Silver Surfer cover I knew it was you and I also knew it was him.  He's a great inker, but like Sinnott, Nowlan and Janson, they can be overpowering.  Some like Austin and Rubinstein don't "bury" the pencil art as much.

Basically just favorite covers for me, the ones I have most nostalgia combined impact on me.

Would be interested to hear what JB thinks. Summing up a career in covers is gotta be tough.

Hulk Annual #7
Marvel Team-Up #79
Avengers #187
X-Men #127
Captain America #254
Fantastic Four #232

I was waiting for JB to respond before I jumped in. Since he's posted in this thread, here I go, but first a word of explanation. I included two covers from UXM because they are both so incredibly influential that it was inconceivable for me to leave out either. Obviously with only six covers, that really makes it difficult to properly cover such a long and illustrious career. I did my best to balance the impact and quality of the covers with simply representing important chapters of JB's career. Inevitably I've left out some big guns and a large stretch of years. Apologies in advance for the omissions...

Anyway:

As much as I enjoy Tom Palmer's inks, I have to say I much prefer the uninked version of the Silver Surfer cover.
