Hey Johnno, I read the panel the same way. It is a dramatic pause, not a mid-stride snap of a walk. It's as if Giant Man is surveying the cityscape and deciding his next move. In fact, the pose works in the best of ways because it conveys a sense of more than what is actually rendered.

The first Galactus evaluation was spot on, the model was too thin. Leyendecker, or the like, would have made an adjustment to the reference. The second evaluation...
And yes, I are an artiste.

-I always got a kick out of Kirby rendering the deltoid as either 3/4 a head large, or a full one head large... Beeeeg guns. Reed Richards didn't start out that way, but the guy put on some serious bulk as Kirby's run went along. -Almost, but not quite as much fun as the change in mass Ditko would render between Pete as Pete and Pete as Spidey.

that galactus does seem like a boy in a halloween costume. Maybe if it'd been a bulkier model and the costume covered more of his face and body it would've worked

One of the reasons I have largely eschewed the use of photographic
reference thru the length of my career is that I have noticed so many who do
seem often to be trapped by it. Somehow unable to escape from a literal
interpretation of what's in the photograph. (Notable exception: Neal
Adams.)

Some years back, an artist I knew was asked by another artist to help him
out by posing for some paperback book covers he'd been hired to paint.
The first guy was, in fact, pretty good "casting" for the character, save for
one small thing -- he had a rather prominent wart on the side of his nose. I
assumed the painter would simply leave that off, but when he showed us the
finished piece, it was literally wart and all. He had been "trapped" by his
reference. Simply could not do anything other than paint everything he saw
in the photos he'd taken.

Great example of what's missing from a lot of modern comics. The Ross image of Galactus doesn't scream "Oh my God, there's a purple-clad giant floating over New York City!" the way Kirby's does; Ross' Galactus could just as easily be a Macy's Thanksgiving float gone awry.

Kirby always got that superheroes (and sometimes their enemies) are meant to be godlike figures, not ordinary Joes in hand-stitched (or in Iron Man's case, hand-welded) union suits.

(Altho, notice the left-left, right-right gaff. . . )
******************
From the first time I saw that Giant-Man shot, I just assumed that he was standing there, ready to catch a thrown Iron Man or about to leap into action. I never read it as him walking across the skyline.

It seems clear to me that that is the intent of the picture as I look at it now, but it never read like that to me. I guess my brain just saw the left-left, right-right thing and said "nope, not walking."
