What I can't forget is the Powers That Were jumping all over Howard Mackie and me because we had "changed" the Scarlet Witch without getting "permission". Same permission I didn't get when I turned Sue Storm in Malice. Or when I had Weezi and She-Hulk switch bodies. Or when I turned the Thing back into his "lumpy" form. Or when I gave Aurora new duds.feh

Oh, my, how I absolutely hated "Punk Storm"! That was about the time I had really grown disenchanted with the X-Men.

I was rather fond of Ororo's mohawk, maybe because I just happen to think that nothing looks cooler than a punk rocker. However, I do heartily agree that JB's W.C. Avengers run was waaaaaaaay underappreciated. Especially since everything currently being thrown at us in all 50,000 "Time Share Condominium of M" tie-ins was already done by JB in just a handful of issues 20 years ago, and done far better.

If you don't mind my asking, JB, what is your ideal Avengers lineup? Was West Coast's the way you wanted it, or did you just use the characters that were there and run with them? Thanks!

The problem with the punk Storm look is that it was destined to be particularly dated when that look, and Mr. T, faded in popularity. It still looks enchanting on Gladiator, however.
I really liked the ghostly white Vision. I always wished that look would have stayed. Ah well.

I was a long time West Coast Avengers fan. I started with issue #14 (the Marvel 25th anniversary issue). The Whackos were a great bunch. Although by the time they hit the mid 30's there had been a bit of a slide in quality. So then imagine my surpise when #42 hits the stands. Here's this amazing John Byrne art, some of my favorite work he's done, with a strong story to match. It was great. This was back before the hype machine had really ramped up. At least to my slightly inexperienced comic sensibilities. It was like a bolt of lightning coming from out of nowhere. That was my first exposure to John Byrne in a lengthy run, at least as a new run of stories.
Thanks John. I've been hooked on your work since.

Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and a handful of rotating members like Antman, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye and so on.

Judging from what you did with Hawkeye you didn't like the character very much.

Not sure how you arrived at that premise Sam, I though JB had Hawkeye acting very much in character during his run on WCA.

JB -
When you came on AVENGERS WEST COAST/AVENGERS, was it your choice to draw-and-write AWC and only write AVENGERS? If so, what made you choose AWC? Was drawing both books ever a consideration?
