A great comission Mr.Byrne! (to me, on Days of Future Past, the absence of Cyclops seems strange).

Juan, this seemed strange to me too, and I almost requested that Cyclops be added to this commission, like I added Mr. Fantastic to my Terrax/Doom piece. But in the end, I felt it best to keep this homage to the exact cast. I think if Cyclops had been in the original tale, the story would have been a bit different. Even though it's my favorite X-men story, it lacks a strong leader. Storm was just learning the ropes in that one.

And, of course, Storm wasn't even supposed to be team leader yet. When I told Chris I thought we should make her leader in Cyclops' absence (Wolverine was the only one with more experience in the field, but he was not leadership material), I also wanted to build to the choice over several issues, in order to play around with Warren's head (him assuming automatically that with Scott gone, he would be the logical choice).

Alas, that's was "not how (Chris) felt at the time" when it came to him writing the dialog, so the whole thing was lost.

Cyclops-- my favorite X-Man. Gonna have to buy a page of X-Men: The Hidden Years one day to get that iconic vision of the character.

Your version would've been a lot stronger, JB.

When I read the original story, I wondered why Angel didn't get the job. I felt that if I were Angel, I would be pissed. Wouldn't you give it to one of the originals out of the fact that A. They've been around the group longer and had more training in the field and B. Out of respect. Hell, even Iceman should be considered before Storm, just out of repect.

JB, you mentioned in Modern Masters that you were to do one more issue after #143, but couldn't bare to stay any longer. Had you stayed, would that story had been the Cyclops one that ran? That story seemed strange and out of place at the time.

Storm being made leader made no sense for the character who up to that point was anything but....

It would have been a Man-Thing story. Other than that. . .

Seems to me Chris Claremont always had a thing for "strong" women and forced Storm into that mold, whether or not there was any foundation for it previously (and there wasn't, IIRC).

Thanks JB, and thanks again for such a great piece to hang in my home. I have a wall all ready for it. May hang the six smaller prints from the French portfolio you did years ago, on both sides of it, if it doesn't look too crowded.

Then again, it was your doing that led to this artwork being created, so I guess it's a wash. You're okay in my book.

Andrew, I think it's great that we get to see all of these that JB creates. I bet it was a pain in the butt for JB to scan this one and then piece it together, so I really appreciate that he went to the trouble to do so.
