Brilliant issue, one that has always been a stand out for me.

Is this the first issue where we start to see the folds in the costumes that come up from the belt line?

Something I noticed when I came back to comics in the eighties, was that there was slightly more attention paid to how clothes / costumes were drawn on a chracter. Especially female characters.
I recall at the time thinking that I didn't remember Sue ever looking quite so "feminine" as she did when JB was drawing her at the time.

Or is it just me?

Love the night-time frame on page 8.  Reed's hair looks like perfect bedhead, and the coloring on it looks just right as well.

How was the "graininess" of the image done?  It looks like a photo taken in low light.

Doom as Vincent Vaughn.  I wonder how he liked Jennifer Aniston.

And that page 18/19 Splash Page!  Freeeow!  It still makes me grin like an idiot to see it.  The sense of scale...is simply awesome.

I also like how Ben mentiones all the other superheroes.  It seems that wasn't all that common in those days.

And Doom as the Phantom of the Opera...very nice.  I think he was actually playing Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

One of my three favorite stories from this run, alongside the Galactus trilogy and "Hero".

One of the most evil Dr. Doom's plans ever is the "big bang" for one of the best stories never told in FF...
Great moments:
-Doom reveals himself as the master planner.
-Alicia goes at the Richards' house desperate for Ben reaction to the hoax (we didn't see it, but I al,ways imagined how it could be).
-Vaughn escapes followed by the robotic mob.

This story is surely popular, if the basic concept has been used various times.
I remember when, in 1999, at least three Marvel comic books had a similar plot...
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: the perfect world storyline, by Mackie and JB.
FANTASTIC FOUR: the Lockdown saga, by Claremont and Larroca.
SPIDER-GIRL: 1999 Annual by DeFalco and Olliffe.

What have these stories in common? The hero/heroes trapped by some villain in some advanced machine in an imaginary world of his/their mind.

Two questions for JB: is it true that some fans told, at the time this story was released, that you copied the it from a book?
Was that the first appearance of Doom's face?
