I didn't think you could improve on the original, very short sighted of me...great work John. I', surprised you never opted to showing at least one of Jeans feet though.

OMFG - This version is awesome. There are many things I can pick out in terms of improvements, so I don't know where to begin. I like how Phoenix's sash is draped over her legs. I always thought that Nightcrawler had a bit of a goofy grin on his face in the original - not so, here!

Okay, as much as I love this image -- and don't get me wrong, I do love it --
I'm still undecided about the lack of spotted blacks in the ghostly
Nightcrawler image. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it still looks
off to me. Like it almost makes the ghostly figure look more solid than the
others.

I always loved the original, but this one just is so much more dramatic. Beautiful.

The opposite of how his face normally appeared, in other words. So, naturally, I repeated that element in the new version!

The differences between the two covers clearly shows how JB skills have grown.
1.) The emotion conveyed in the new version is more clear and dramatic and
2.) Perspective, perspective, perspective!
BTW, I still would have loved to seen how Terry Austin would have tackled this one!

I would have to put myself in that camp. I think that over the years, your pencils have become more organic, while Terry's inks have become more mechanical. The broken lines all over the place really irk me as well.

I really love when you "re-imagine" some of your old cover work, JB!!
I agree that the new version has stronger emotion to it and i love
how you did the ghost images. Your X-Men will always be the ones
i remember best!!! ( Especially the Beast and Wolverine!!!)
-C!
