John Byrne-Master of Quiet Drama.  Put that on your business cards.
A little OT here regarding "emotion lines"...I remember an episode of "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" where Will Smith was showing a girl, maybe it was the cousin character, hillary, an issue of Spider-Man.  It was a panel of Spider-Man when his "Spidey-Sense" was tingling...she commented "What are those lines by his head?  Does his head stink?"
I found it funny.

Cockrum's use of "emotion lines" to show shock or surprise or anger is
something that never fails to annoy me about his work.

I was just re-reading X-Men 150 where Scott tells Magneto about Jean's
sacrificing herself on the Moon to save the universe from Phoenix, and he
resorts to it twice within 4 panels! Aaaargh!

It was something I just thought was silly looking as a kid, but now find it
really jarring and annoying as an adult.

One of the strengths that JB has always shown and developed is the
ability to convey any emotion just through expression alone, even way
back in his early career. I'll always remember that page in the Magneto
story that proceeded the Savage Land/Garok stories where they've all
been captured by Magneto and reduced to the physical capabilities of
children but with their full adult minds. John did a head shot of each
member of the team that reflected their realizations of what's been done
to them and just how hideous an imprisonment Magneto had placed them
in, and each face conveyed a response unique and in character for each
one.

Amazing stuff.

Oh, and the re-imaginated cover is stunning! Thanks as always for
sharing, JB.

Great piece...but in this one, Xavier, Jean and Hank seem so vulnerable to pain...

This new picture is full of emotion (not that the original wasn't, but this is more so). You can feel their pain. Nice work.

This re-imaginated ;-) piece tops the others. The Beast, in particular, stands out in this fantastic cover.

****

I'd compare it to something the other Michael Caine said when asked if he felt he really deserved to be paid a million dollars per picture. As he saw it, he said, he wasn't getting that million for the work he was doing now, he was getting it for all the crap jobs he did for next to nothing at the beginning of his career.

The X-Men have indeed been "good to (me)" -- lately.
