You know, every time I see one of these pieces, I get just a little bit angrier.
Angry because there's no monthly outlet in which to view this work anymore.
The images take be back to a time that can never be again thanks in part to
the sad shape of the company that was once Marvel. Even the books I buy on
a regular basis now don't give me the same kind of thrill I got as when John
was working with these characters full time.

Very powerful. One of the things I've noticed about these reimaginings is
that the viewer is much closer to the characters, increasing the drama and
strength of the image. I like this one a lot, especially the Beast. You really
have to feel for him in that shot.

(Overheard that in a diner once, and I've always remembered it).

Splendid job JB!!!
One of the best re-imagined X-Men Covers (at least of the ones I've seen).
Doesn't beat the Iron Fist w Sabretooth, though. Still getting goosebumps when I think about that one.

oohhhhhh, this is the cover to the first X-Men I bought, many moons ago.
Just the beginning of my John Byrne obsession.
Gotta bid on this.

I found the new version to be packed with much more emotion and pathos. It amazes me how much emotion can be evoked by a drawing like this, and even if one was ignorant of the contents of the book, or the events that led up to it, it is so apparent what is going on.
A masterpiece.

I found the new version to be packed with much more emotion and pathos.*** Some of you probably already know the backstory on the original. I was still working off sketches done by other artists. In this case, Dave Cockrum did the sketch. In his version, Xavier was leaning forward in his chair, his right hand up to his face, a burst of "emotion lines" indicating the degree of his anguish. (You've all seen these a million times. They can range from something as subtle as a quiver of the head to something as explosive as a scream.) No matter what I did, tho, when I penciled the full sized version I could not capture what Dave had in the sketch. It kept coming out looking like Xavier had been shot in the eye with a BB gun. So, finally, despite Shooter's stern injunction that I must "never change the sketch", I tried it with Xavier slumping back in his chair, his arms down. I guess it worked, since Shooter not only passed the final version, he paid me one of the few compliments he managed to squeeze out during our working relationship, saying it was stuff like this that made me the "master of quiet drama."
