I personally think Godwin's Law should be amended to include privately owned  and operated message boards and references to "Big Brother".

Since I can control neither these postings nor (more importantly) the content of the chats

I'd be more inclined to agree with you if that 'nor' wasn't part of the original statement. I mean, JB is careful with the words he types, so presumably, the 'nor' is meant to dilineate between the two, right?

It must be a typo.  Surely no-one would wish to control the content of a chat?

"nor (more importantly) the content of the chats" in so much as what was written could then be used to misrepresent John himself, ie. the content of the chats.  That's all I'm getting at. Not that what was written in chat couldn't be controlled such that it all had to tow some nonexistent party line. I see what you're saying, Jason, but you're totally ignoring the first half of his statement to get to the second which supports whatever it is you're debating with me.  The reasons aren't mutually exclusive nor to be taken separate from one another.

Isn't it like 10am in the UK by now? Why aren't you drunk yet, Dan?

Matt, I must say that I'm rather bemused by the explanation you offer here.  The 'contextual leap' that Jason makes is not particularly far.  Otherwise, why is the chat room still defunct?  A lot of members enjoyed using it and JB popped in there himself, on occasion.  I know that no-one involved in the running of this board has to 'justify' themselves on a trivial point such as this - but it's a pity.

Why is it still defunct?  That seems obvious to me.  People took conversations from chat and posted them in other threads and forums as representative of this forum.  They also took those self-same conversations out-of-context to support whatever argument they were pushing.  Nothing from that time to now has changed such that something like that wouldn't occur again.  So why would we open up the chat room again just to have the exact same thing happen?  The only pity to me is that there are some people out there with so much time on their hands as to do what they did with the chat conversations in question.  Don't blame us for shutting it down, but rather blame those that couldn't be adult enough to leave what was said in chat to the moment in time in which it was said, context and all.

I could never get into Wonder Woman as a kid because, you know, that was a "girl" comic -- gasp! But JB's work turned me around as an adult, and this commission is just a taste of why. NICE!

No, "one" wouldn't. Nor would "one" want out-of-context "quotes" being posted to other message boards.

It's really quite simple. All you have to do is stop looking for "subplots".
