Along with Wanda and Zatanna, the Black Widow has suffered as well.

I've always thought this was a nice look for the Black Widow

I like the little Micro Scarlet Witch that winks and kisses.

not really demure

I made that one - that was one of my really early ones.

i'd have to say my favorite costumes were the early versions -

And Zatanna's another easy choice.

Why they choose to screw up the classic looks I don't know.

Romita's remake of the Black Widow was fine, but once someone has an established long-standing look it has to be a no-brainer to change it.

Uh...to try something new? If creators hadn't tinkered with classic costumes, Captain America, Superman, and Batman would all look different (arguably a substantial difference between what they started with and what later became their 'base' appearance).

Change doesn't have to be evil all the time, right?

As has Susan Richards.

I'm not adverse to change, just change for change sake.  Like Olivier Coipel's redesign of Warbird/Ms. Marvel for instance.  Thank got that horrific design disappeared rather quickly.

On the other hand, I think the Gil Kane redesign of Mar-Vell from his Kree military uniform to his red & blue/black one made perfect sense, and the costume was visually appealing too.

The Defalco-Ryan Sue Storm costume is simply an extrapolation of the JB-designed Malice costume, brought on by a re-emergence of the Malice persona. So you'd probably have to blame JB for that one.

It's eye of the beholder, as usual.  One of the first Spider-man issues I ever read was 86, which happened to introduce the "new look" Black Widow, so not surprisingly, Romita's redesign is my favorite.  I still think it's about the sexiest outfit I've ever seen... sleek, simple, shiny black, cool 60s belt.  The original Black Widow's eye mask seems dated to me, and walking around in those gaudy mink stolls trying to be a secret agent seems a little silly, too.  I like both the older fishnet / bowtie Zatanna as well as the sleeker, tighter version I first saw in JLA 161, though push comes to shove, I probably vote for the sleeker version, which showed off her hair better than the fishenet bowtie version, which featured a tophat.

Although they obviously have vastly different powers, associations and origins, I generally associate DC's Zatanna with Marvel's Black Widow.  Both are among the sexiest unattached brunette heroines in their respective publisher's universe.  Both spent some time in the flagship independent hero team titles (JLA for Zatanna, Avengers for Black Widow) and both have undergone major appearance transformations over the years.  Given their magical powers, the obvious analog for DC's Zatanna is Marvel's Scarlet Witch, but I never really linked the two.  Maybe some of it was SW hooking up with the Vision, whereas Zatanna seemed like a confirmed bachelorette.

Remember when Vision and Scarlet Witch hitched up? It was in Giant-Size Avengers #4, June 1975. I always thought it was a little weird for someone to get married to a robot, no offense ROG 2000.

I agree about the Black Widow's costume change, Rick. The Romita redesign was a big upgrade over her original look, which comes across as pretty dated now.

However, I hated the Black Widow's late-80s look, when she went with the gray costume and short hair. Just awful.

As for Zatanna, c'mon - it's the fishnet/bowtie look all the way. I mean, everyone and their dog wears spandex, but what other heroine wears a tux and top hat? It helps set her apart from the crowd.
