Assuming, of course, that Wanda be demure and coy while still looking so incredibly hot.
I always enjoy JB's Scarlet Witch. Someday I hope for a Scarlet Witch series by the master himself.

Mini-series, maybe. Like so many other great
characters, I don't think she could carry an on-going
on her own.

And the face criticism never rang true with me. I always loved the myriad faces JB has been able to come up with.
I think what some people play on, was the oval shaped face and long eye lashes of Jean Grey and imputed or compared her features to any other female JB drew at the time.

It's a lot easier than that, Brad. I've mentioned elsewhere, on more than one occasion, that I generally avoid discussing in specific what it is I don't like about my own work. My reason for this is simple: in the past, any time I have done so, the micro-brains seize upon whatever I say and start brandishing it as if it is their own original thought. And they continue to do so long after the reality has changed. So, too, with my faces. Early in my career I admitted I had a limited range of heroic male faces, and a even more limited range of beautiful female faces. A shortcoming, as I also noted, that I was working constantly to overcome. Well, I did overcome it, decades ago. But the fan-mantra was locked in -- "All Byrne's faces look the same." Right along with "Byrne doesn't draw backgrounds." Both charges perfectly true, once, long ago. Not any more, of course. But now locked in so that expressing a different notion would require having an actual original thought. Not likely.

Is it fair to say that most of Jack Kirby's female faces looked the same, and that the only real way to tell his women apart was by their hair and clothes/costumes?

This has raised two questions that I would love to see JB answer, if he's so inclined ...
- I know you found your time on the Avengers titles frustrating because you had to deal with stories in the characters' "home books." Do you think could do a long happy run on Avengers with only characters that don't (usually) have their own titles? Any thoughts on what that lineup might be?
- How tall do you think the Scarlet Witch is?

1. But then it wouldn't be the Avengers!
2. 5' 9"
Second question takes me back to early days on THE AVENGERS. I did breakdowns on an issue, and, thinking Wanda was fairly tall, I drew a wide panel in which she is talking to Hawkeye, and is at his eye level. When this issue was handed off to an inker, he not only added copious and distracting (not to mention architecturally inaccurate -- Avengers Mansion is not Versailles!) backgrounds, in that particular panel he tipped the horizon, making Wanda much shorter than Hawkeye, even tho she was wearing high heels!!

What are the odds that a commission would turn out so beautifully? When John Byrne’s at the drawing board, they’re 1 to 1.
This hex really marks the spot, John. This is my first commission from anyone, and to have my favorite Marvel character illustrated by my all-time favorite comic book artist (someone who also happens to be one of my favorite writers) is just a huge thrill for me. You have my heartfelt thanks.
--Jeff
P.S.—I believe a second JB commission will be winging his way to me at some point—along with his two metal friends.

Lovely piece. Feels exactly right. I've seen Wanda butchered by many an artist. I see 4 artists as having done the character proud: You, the Buscemas, & Heck. Period.
