Now for some criticism: some of the shots here would look better if they had backgrounds (especially that last page in James and Heather's house -- can you imagine how that would look in black and white?).
(There!~ I said it!!).
I've seen this criticism before and can see how it could be valid for some, but I can honestly say that I never missed the backgrounds. The figures only approach seemed to focus the moment on the characters, rather than have them be lost to a sea of "stuff." I often prefer story telling in this fashion because the panels are freer, unless the background is a story element.

Team books are all about the chemistry between the team members, and Alpha Flight had that great chemistry from the very first issue. I sure wish this series would get the Essential treatment.

I guess the "no background" criticism would work if JB was doing it because he couldn't draw them. In this case, I defer to the professional storyteller and give the benefit of the doubt that there was a point to that page being done that way.
Oh, and Alpha Flight was my favorite comic when I was a teenager. That was a two year period where getting to the LCS once a month was essential. And we were getting FF at the same time.

Absolutely fantastic (despite what Mr Byrne thinks) - and in the UK I first saw this reprinted in our fortnightly Secret Wars comic mainly in glorious B&W!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Only good reason to pick that thing up.

This is where it all started for me. I love/d Alpha Flight! I have been a Byrne victim ever since. Thank you, JB. I do not think I can put into words how much I loved this comic and how much I enjoyed your work on it. You had a serious impact on my childhood and my life, and while it might not seem like much to some, I greatly appreciate it. Thanks again.

I've mentioned in the past how much I loved the solo (or duo) adventures for much of the "year" with the team coming together for big stuff only once or twice in a publishing year. It was so different (and still is). That sounds like a neat premise for the Defenders.
Loved this issue and once I read it I have to sit down and read the rest of JB's run on this title.

And thank you for the Guardian commission and thank you for this forum. It is really cool that you take the time to interact with us. How often do grown men get to interact with their childhod heroes? Yes heroes. When my childhood fell apart, it was you, among others, who gave me what I needed most. Heroes. You and your work had a profound influence on my life. Let's not forget that there are real people behind our 4 color heroes, and I wouldn't be the person I am today without your influence.
You did good. You made a difference in the lives of children, and I hope you realize this.
Ciao!

Not an attempt at justification by any means, but whenever the question of
"no backgrounds" comes up, I find myself flashing back to these pages,
specifically the first (one of my personal favorites, of all of Kirby's work).
Would the scene have been meansurably improved, had Jack or the finisher
added full backgrounds to each, or even some, of the panels?

This page illustrates, I think, the importance of good storytelling over drawing backgrounds (cluttering the page) just because.
