I was talking with Terry Austin this morning, and as we rambled thru many topics, he told me a story I had not heard before.

Seems Terry went into the Marvel offices one day, and Archie Goodwin (then EiC) emerged from his sanctum sanctorum and approached Terry with an idea. "They're going to cancel X-MEN," Archie said (as Terry paraphrased), "but if I can get them to make it monthly, we may be able to save it. If I can talk Byrne into penciling, would you be interested in inking?" Seems Arch had really liked the pairing of Terry and me on STARLORD, and thought it would work well for the merry mutants.

"Sure!" said Terry. And, as you can well imagine, Archie didn't have to work very hard to get me to accept the assignment. (I had made it known that if Dave Cockrum ever left that book and it didn't come to me, the halls of Marvel would run red!)

It was funny to hear this story from Terry. I had no idea my being invited onto the book was part of a "plan" Archie was putting together to save it from cancelation! But that sure does clarify why, when I suggested Sam Grainger continue on X-MEN (to make the transition from Dave to me easier on the loyal X-Fans) and Terry join me on MARVEL TEAM-UP, Archie was so adamant about the configuration he'd initially proposed!

So there's an interesting but of Marvel history -- Terry Austin was actually assigned to UNCANNY before me! (Now -- imagine the alternate reality where I said "No"!)

Hmm, I wonder who else (in this alternate reality) could have been plan B...

Maybe George Perez? That probably would've changed lots of things, maybe he wouldn't have eneded up at DC on the Titans.

Sorry, imagination running wild <g>...

George was pretty well entrenched on THE AVENGERS, as I recall. I wondered, based on how Terry told the tale, if this was a make-or-break idea in Archie's mind. (No way to know, now!)

Would you have continued working on Team Up?  Were there alternative projects to work on?  Did you get the itch to work on The World's Greatest Comic Magazine?

So, it really can be said that you saved the X-Men!

----

Just an  interesting bit of trivia, since we;re on the subject - your first issue of X-Men came out the same month as the final issue of your first fill-in run for Perez on Avengers (the Count Nefaria storyline).

Do you happen to remember which was drawn first?

John, you have so many of these insider-type stories from Marvel and DC about so many famous books.  have you ever considered compiling them, or writing some kind of book?

Not to speak for John, but I recall him saying he pitched such an idea--it was rejected because it sounded too much like Kavalier & Clay.

Whatever.

I'd have bought a copy.

It's great that history shows Archie Goodwin was a genius!

Was Cockrum leaving anyway or did Archie choose to replace him for you JB (because if I read the story right because the book was going monthly)?
