Why did Terry Austin leave after X-Men 143?

Was Cockrum leaving anyway or did Archie choose to replace him for you JB (because if I read the story right because the book was going monthly)?

••

Terry's version of events is somewhat different from what Shooter told me, when he (as Archie's assistant) called to offer me X-MEN. His version was that the book was going monthly, and that Dave, knowing he could not handle a monthly title, was leaving. If Terry's version is closer to the actual sequence of events -- and I have no reason to doubt it! -- it would seem the book going monthly was predicated on my agreeing to do it.

Just an interesting bit of trivia, since we;re on the subject - your first issue of X-Men came out the same month as the final issue of your first fill-in run for Perez on Avengers (the Count Nefaria storyline).

Do you happen to remember which was drawn first?

••

When I accepted the X-MEN assignment, I was living in London, Ontario. That's where I was when I drew STARLORD. Not long after I said "Yes" to X-MEN, I moved back to Calgary, Alberta, and spent about three weeks in a motel while I looked for an apartment. I drew my first issue of X-MEN in that motel room. I drew the AVENGERS job in my new apartment.

JB:

What was it about X-Men that made you want to draw the title so badly?  Was it the concept?  Your own "personal history" (as a fan) with the book?  Was it based on what was happening in the book at the time? On working with Claremont again?  Why X-Men instead of Captain America or some other title?

JB -

Amazing that there are still "untold tales" about your time on X-Men.

Thanks for sharing!

Speaking of your X-Men run. While cleaning up my collection, I finally saw (again) Chris' Kitty lesbian incest kiss. Surely it was a kiss on the forehead from the elder to the kid, no tongues involved right?? Still a pretty bizarre thing for him to write.

Whether it was on the forehead, the nose, or a deep slurpy one on the lips really doesn't matter. With that single caption, Chris gutted the story I had so carefully plotted.

Was Chris just going with the fad of times?  It seems he had a tendency to just what seems cool for the times.

Great story JB. Thanks for sharing.

JB, was it tough to draw that first issue in a motel room?

Archie Goodwin has just been vaulted to the status of Demigod.
