Calling Buckler a swiper is putting it kindly. It's worth mentioning that he sued The Comics Journal for publishing examples of his outright plagiarism of a Jack Kirby story, and subsequently withdrew his lawsuit after being devastated in the deposition phase.
Comic Book Artist featured an amusing back and forth between Buckler and Gary Groth on the matter, but it's not online. This quote is from a Seattle Weekly article on Fantagraphics:
QUOTE:
In 1982, "we were sued by an artist named Rich Buckler, because we
called him a plagiarist in 48-point type," says Groth drolly. "That got
as far as depositions, and then he quit, because we pretty much proved
that he was a plagiarist. Our lawyers started showing up with a
stack like [motions with hands] this tall of his art and the art he
plagiarized from, went through it piece by piece, and he caved." |

The original TCJ article is pretty damning. This page has some quotes from it:
QUOTE:
"The story
[in Red Circle's THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS #1] is followed by five pages
of origin reprises for the seven major characters. These are signed
'R. Buckler '82,' which indicates to me that Rich Buckler wishes to take
credit for drawing these pages in 1982.
"Following
the main Fly story [in THE FLY #1] are two shorter stories.
The first is a four-pager, "Who Is... The Man With The DOUBLE
LIFE?" Here, once again, the origin of the late '50s Shield
is given a 'reprise' -- and here, once again, Rich Buckler takes full
credit for 'script, art and editing.'
"Folks,
the word for this is plagiarism.
"Every
single panel has been taken from the 1959 issue [...] What Buckler
has done here might, with charity, be called 'pastiche'; but I can't help
thinking it's simply stolen goods."
-- "It All Boils Down To The Editor" (Ted White; THE COMICS JOURNAL
#83; August, 1983)

Lol.
For all his flaws (and swipes) i still like Rich Buckler a lot.
He is, like Keith Pollard, one of those artist whose work isn't extra-spectacular or extra original, but that serve decently the story and in the end help to make a good comicbook.

While I never disliked Buckler's work, I can't say it ever really jumped out at me either. I've enjoyed comics that he worked on, but never bought anything because he drew it.

Don't worry Paul, I didn't know either! This thread has been VERY informative.

Thats not a big deal. Buckler's swipes are well documented and proved.
That change nothing to the fact that he helped to make lot of stories enjoyable.
There is room in the comics history for lesser artists who just make the story work. Whatever it takes. Whatever works.

I think his lack of being mentioned in the same category as his peers has a great deal to do with his swiping, apeing other artists styles and using assistants. I still have a fondness for his work, because I first started reading comics in the 70's and he was all over the comics I read. Either interiors or covers.

Thanks Joel. You're right in that it has been informative. This is a side of Buckler's work I knew nothing about, which I suspect will color my memories of the comics I enjoyed somewhat. Given Mr. Byrne's response, I hope I didn't upset him.

Not everybody can be Neal Adams, Jack Kirby or John Byrne.
Sometime you need a Buckler to have decent comic books every month.
