Best Wolverine... EVER! Absolutely perfect! Always loved this cover.
JB, as you were recreating this cover, did you feel the need to change anything in it? Is there anything that you don't like in it?

Danton --- I have a bit of George Lucas in me. I'd change ALL my old
drawings, if I could!

Ryan, this one isn't for me. It just so happened that I asked Jim Warden about a recreation of this last week, but he said someone else had already asked for it.

Vinny, you could ask for a reimagining of the cover.

Idea: Let's all take a minute to dream that JB was offered and accepted work on that title right now, and given free reign to avoid all current crossover storylines and do what he wanted with Wolverine.
momentary sigh of wistful thinking...
This piece is excellent.

This is one of my favorite covers because it is the book the drew me back into comics after I quit reading them as a teen. This recreation is easily one of my favorite pieces this year.

I wish art and books today had the kind of solid black shading used for definition or muscles and shadows that this piece showcases. I vigorously dislike the flat outline art these days that depends on the computer colorist to do all the shading. I admit I've even been a little disappointed that some of the art in FX didn't have more in the way of blacks and more defined shadows and textures. Give me high contrast and a basic color palette any day.

I know, and I've thought about that, trust me. But I have this fear that maybe I won't like it as much as the original. That's not a statement against JB's current abilities by any means, just that the nostalgia factor is at play here - I was practically knocked off of my feet when I first saw this drawing in an issue of Comics Interview, before #17 actually came out. I was not yet 16 then. One thing I love the most about it is the texturing on it.

••
If John Buscema had never drawn the character, I might let my ego out of the
box long enough to agree with you. Maybe. If JRjr had broken his hand that
day.
But since John Buscema DID draw the character. . . .

Yeah, I'm with Ted. Sorry, JB. You just have to deal with being the best Wolverine (and Batman!) artist in my mind.

My first reply to a commission piece. Always love the commission thread.
John, how do you do your recreate your covers? Do you get out the originals, transfer the pencil work and re-ink them? After seeing this one I checked on an FF cover you did and it's also pretty spot on to the original.
If not, I applaud you, because in photoshop these two on top of each other are almost identical!
Amazing!

Awesome re-imaging!
I loved this all-too-brief run. I didn't think I'd like the Byrne/Janson collaboration, but I was pleasantly surprised. Classic work.

JB, were you offered the regular Wolverine series when it began? And if so, why didn't you take it?
