If I recall correctly, it wasn't Johns who "killed" Hal's father but Keith Giffen and Gerard Jones in the Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn mini-series. Johns simply took that particular ball and ran with it. And in that mini-series Hal Jordan was also a drunk. This type of retconning tarnishing and tragic backstory into these types of characters has been going on for over twenty years or so.

The worst thing is that Hal wasn't supposed to be a drunk. Priest, who wrote the first chapter of Emerald Dawn said that his intent was that Hal be wrongly accused of drunk driving but we as readers would realize that he hadn't been. Giffen and Jones took it at face value, and that's how we got drunk driving Hal Jordan.
(Though that really isn't that big a deal for me. Dr. Strange had a similar origin, and as long as the point of the origin is "He used to be bad, but has since redeemed himself" then its okay.)

Question For JB: A lot of creative people seem to look back fondly on a time
when they couldn't show it all, but had a lot of fun suggesting.
I always wonder, though, if that was the case at the time. Did you bristle
under the comics code? Did it tick you off? Would your work of the 70s and
80s look significantly different had there been no code?

Is Van Sciver doing the art for Flash: Rebirth? If so, that might be a good match -- his tendency to one-up Rob Liefeld when it comes to over-drawing and using as many lines as possible on the page to portray even the simplest of scenes just might work well in this instance given all "speed lines" that typically appear in a Flash comic.

Yes, Van Sciver is the artist on Flash: Rebirth. I'm hoping that the majority of the series is finished, otherwise we could have long waits between issues.

Yeh the dead Dad wasn't Johns. Though he did make Hal a USAF pilot in the main DCU ( cribbed from New Frontier?). Can't say I'm too fond of the USAF angle. Hal working for Ferris made things easier from a secret ID standpoint. Superheroes in the Military work best when the situation is more like the GA Captain America.
I have to wonder if Barry is going to be more of a CSI field op rather than the labguy I recall?

Ethan Van Sciver said in an interview that #3 will show more of what that was about. It was left quite ambiguous in #1.

Dave Phelps: (Wally's) kids came into play when the decision had already been made to bring back Barry and they were working out the kinks as to how. I guess it was just a way to give Wally a happy ending of sorts. The wife's been around for awhile, but considering that Barry was one of the first ongoing heroes to tie the knot, I think that evens things out between him and Wally.

"Hey guys, let's fix things and bring back Barry Allen! Don't worry, In the process we can ruin another character!!"
Poor Wally.
*sigh*

So, Wally's an adult with teenage children now. Bart was also aged to adult
status (though I don't know what the status of the "returned" Bart will be
after Legion of 3 Worlds).
How long will it be before we're treated to a brand new Kid Flash to age
prematurely?

When Wally first appeared, he was 10 years old. Barry seemed to be in his 20s...
Now Wally seems to be in his 30s...
