Al was finisher over Paul's breakdowns on X-Factor. It's a shame. While I respect Milgrom as an inker and believe the combo would work, I can't stand his art when he gets to do more than ink. Unfortunately, their X-Factor effort wasn't very enjoyable.
Pauls hould be inked by himself, Bob Wiacek, Terry Austin or even Rubinstein.

Which reminds me one of my favorite books of the past few years, the Kitty Pryde limited series Paul drew a couple of years ago.

I miss Gerry.  A lot of these commissions belong to him.

So that's what was "off " about those X-factor issues. I love his X-Men work. In particular the issues with Wolverine's wedding  in Japan. Also, he draws great hair.

I was thinking the same thing, Ryan.  Gerry has a comprehensive understanding of Doctor Strange, and I always enjoyed reading his posts.

yeah, I pulled all those commissions of CAF from a CAF member Gerry Turnbull.  I see he's a member here, too, but hasn't been here in months.  Did something happen to him?  He has quite an extensive CAF gallery.

Can I ask you guys what exactly you like about Paul Smith?  I don't mean that in a sarcastic way.  Just trying to understand his appeal.  I know he was a very popular artist back in his X-Men days, but his style just doesn't seem particularly dynamic to me.

Paul Smith came to the comics from animation. The influence of his
animation period is clearly visible in his artwork through its simple, elegant
figure work and clear layouts. ( have you seen much of his X-MEN work?)

What i liked in his panels was how he portrayed movement without the use
of action lines; his facial expressions were excellent as well.

There is a cleanness, an honesty to Paul's line that I adore.  His figures aren't muscle bound oafs, they're athletic and fluid.  His women are beautiful, not due to big cartoon boobs, but from the subtle elegance of their flowing hair or a sparkle in their eye.  I think Pauls style is so well suited for the medium, even more so than masters like John Byrne, George Perez and Neal Adams (etc).  I personally find cartooning styles like Paul's and the late Mike Parobec to be so illuminating on the comic page, that I can look at their panels forever and find new dynamics in them.

Couple of examples of his storytelling skills....

Very clear and well-choreographed.

I'm a big fan of Paul Smith. Here's a sketch he did for me back in 97. It's not on the level of Gerry's commissions, but I think it's still pretty sweet.
