"One of the most important elements of comicbook illustration that was
pounded into my tiny brain early on was that of SILHOUETTE. This
is the basic shape a figure defines on the page. Ideally -- and,
yes, the ideal is sometimes difficult to achieve -- it should be possible to
black in any figure and still be able to tell what the "action" is. And that's
all the way from sitting talking on the phone to leaping off a skyscraper.

This is something too many artists either do not know or simply ignore.
But if you check out the major talents of this industry -- Kirby, Ditko,
Buscema, Kubert, Kane, etc -- you will see it is the understanding of this
rule that really gives that added oomph to their work"

I know that there's an interview in comics journal where Gil Kane says basically the exact same thing. I believe it's along the line of  "the first thing I try to establish is a strong silhouette..."
Once again a master's touch on a great graphic idea!!!!

JB, I know you've said before that your job is to illustrate JUST ENOUGH to tell the story, and, wow - those squiggles in the buildings do just that!  Vertical blinds, horizontal blinds, varied detail found in each window - just like any of us would see if we happened to be so lucky as to spot Spider-Man in the split-second he struck this pose.  Amazing, indeed!

Absolutly fabulous! I am stunned. It goes right there with the AF cover with Aurora.

Looking at the two versions and thinking about how much 'better' the cityscape is in the commission, I observed a few things:
On the older image, the buildings are abstracted/simplified. They form a cliff-like wall behind the figure and your eye stays with Spider-Man. It is more 'backgroundy', if that makes sense. In the commission, the details in the windows draw your eye to them. I want to look at every window. The city looks navigable and more realistic, less backgroundy. The city is as much of a character in this drawing as Spider-Man and the entire page draws your interest more than the older image. In fact, Spider-Man can be seen as negative space, hence the meaning of "all subjective" in the title I think.

That's an interesting observation, Dave. As usual you have a good eye.

Stunning!

I'm a little surprised it took this long for someone to request a reimagining of this particular cover. Echoing others before me, this looks even better than the original!

Wow...this piece just arrived today and I'm looking at it up close.  Man, this is one great commission.  Looks way better in person!  It's a hundred times better than the cover that inspired it.

Blair needed to raise some money, so he has been selling some of his collection to get it.  I saw this on eBay and had to bid.  It's one of my favorite JB commissions, I even have it on my work desktop computer.

Luckily I won the bid, I guess everyone wanted the Wolverine instead, fine by me!  I'm sorry Blair had to part with it, but glad it's here now.  Off to the framer tomorrow.

My only worry is that  Blair mention something about his "precious", I hope I won't have to go to Mordor and Mt. Doom!
