I am no longer able to convince myself it is pure paranoia to say it's all deliberate! Did you read/see Civil War?

I love this commission, being an Avengers fan Kang has always been one of my favorite Marvel villains. I love the black shading on the boots, it gives them a cool, leathery feel! As much as I love Jb's commissions, I feel the Kirby designed characters always have a little something extra in your work! Maybe its the Kirby fan in you that enjoys his designs a little more, or maybe his characters just translate well in your style! Great job!

Did you read/see Civil War?
Or anything you did at DC for that matter?

Michael Tortorice, I have been having a similar thought. This drawing transcends the stylistic 'hints' I associate (and love) in John Byrne's work. This Kang piece is superbly drawn and yet "feels" anonymous. The "vibe" I get is one of the days of the skilled draftsman who drew sci-fi comics in the days before Marvel's style and "celebrity" pencilers/inkers. I love the textures. This is my favorite single character commission this year.

Kang is so bizarre in the first place....JB makes him creepy and perfect. Love the boots and mask the most!

Kang really is an odd-looking character. That helmet! Really rather strange. I have to admit -- I'm not a massive fan of the character. It's a pretty fine commission though. Like the pose, with the reaching hand. I'm not sure I'd be able to identify this as being by John Byrne if I just saw it on a comic cover, for example. Not that many Byrne hallmarks -- the face looks remiscent of the work of John Buscema and the torso has Kirby influences. Maybe the gun or the drapery would give it away; but maybe not.

Sorry I`m late to the party guys,
I`m soon to be the (very) proud owner of this Kang commission!
And it`s my first!
Thanks very much JB, it looks fantastic on the scan, can`t wait
to see the real thing.
Great to imagine you flicking thru Avengers 8 to get the costume
"just right" - I really appreciate that!
We had a death in the family last week, so things have been a bit
sad around these parts, but having my commission accepted and then
completed has given me a great lift! After being a JB fan for
25 years, having you draw something just for *me* is a dream
come true. Hopefully the first of many...
Thanks very much JB!
Cheers,
Mike Devlin

There's so much Gil Kane in this one, it's scary! Haunting!

Awesome, Mike! Congrats on joining the Commission Club!
Here's my introduction to this character:
I thought he was a cool toy for years before I really knew anything about him.

That was the only Secret Wars figure I didn't have -- and Secret Wars was my first introduction to the character as well. Which may explain my indifference towards him -- he was given virtually nothing to do.

"Awesome, Mike! Congrats on joining the Commission Club!" - Joe Hollon
Thanks very much Joe! Feels great to have joined The Club,
I must say! My mind is spinning with ideas for more commissions now...
Btw I have one of those old Secret Wars Kang toys too. Not the greatest looking Kang action figure is he? hehe
Cheers!
