Just for fun, here's Gil Kane's version of the same scene for a 70's-era reprint of that story (guess he couldn't fit the Matador in there).  Three great artists, and three completely different approaches.

If making corny costumes look good is one of JB's superpowers (Leap Frog actually looks scary and formidable!), another one is also the way JB stages a piece.  Looking at the previous two covers and then at the commission piece, I love love love JB's placement of all the figures, the dynamic camera angle, and how there is no wasted "space" on the page.  You truly are a modern master.

I *think* neither Gladiator, Matador, nor Leapfrog made the cut for OHOTMU, so if I'm remembering correctly, this may well be the first Byrne-drawn appearance for each of them.
