Hi JB,

If you were asked by DC (and accepted the assignment) to undo Superman’s marriage to Lois Lane, in continuity – do you know how you would do it?

Thanks!

Not a clue. Don't want a dead Lois or a divorced Superman.

Maybe -- maybe ---- when I was first approached to reboot Superman, as many of you know, I wanted to do it in continuity, not with a MAN OF STEEL style relaunch. I came up with the idea of having Superman screw up in some astonishingly cosmic way, so that the entire Earth is destroyed, and everyone on it -- except Superman. He wanders the Universe alone and racked with guilt, seeking out someone, anyone who can help him undo this terrible mistake. Finally he encounters "God", who says yes, he can put everything right, but there will be a price. Superman says "ANYTHING!"

Next issue, the rocket lands outside Smallville.

My story, incidentally, was inspired by this one:

I read it as a kid, and as a kid was not at all bothered by it all turning out to be a Red K induced mutual dream. Which my story would NOT have been!

As long as God does not look like Santa Claus, that would be a nice reboot!

Maybe DC could just borrow MEPHISTO from Marvel?

Let's never forget the valuable lesson taught by 80s soap opera DALLAS when confronted when an unpopular storyline that needs to be reversed: it was all a dream.

That was actually done, Thom. Superman and Lois were married for a while in the newspaper strip. When National Comics noticed they ordered it immediately undone, and it turned out to be a dream.

How different would Superman be if he was raised in the orphanage as in his initial origin? (Maybe that's why the first Superman was so dog-gone mean!)

How about:

"Hi Lois, I'm back from that secret, long-term mission in space to save reality as we know it and -- Hey! What the heck is that Superman Robot I left in my place DOING here?!"

The Bobby Ewing dream sequence on Dallas was fracking brilliant.

Patrick Duffy's character was DEAD.  Speculation was out that Duffy was coming back but no one would reveal HOW.  The producers had Duffy film a bath soap commercial for "Duffy Soap" - an actual brand - and kept the footage of him in the shower.  No one on the Dallas set knew about the shower scene or "dream" notion until afterwards.  All the storylines building up to it were brilliant.  Viewers had to wonder how Sue Ellen escaped the exploding briefcase, and other cliffhangers, as well as "who is the Bobby Ewing looking guy in Pam's shower?" -- only to be told it was a dream !!!

Brilliant !!

Cheap ass writing - but brilliant execution !!

The Dream Season remains highly controversial among DALLAS fans.  Soap fans and comic fans share many similarities -- just as there are undoubtedly still fans debating CRISIS, there are DALLAS fans debating the Dream Season twenty years after the fact.

Me, I admired the audacity of it.  But then I think DALLAS gets a bum wrap all around, being lumped in with its lesser imitators like DYNASTY.
