"The Last Policeman" by Ben Winters.
The worlds has just learned that an asteroid is going to hit Earth, society is crumbling in the face of the inevitable, and a detective new to the unit is intent on solving a suicide that he things might have been murder. Very interesting premise, deftly told, not only doling out hints in this mystery that might not be one, but also giving glimpses of what the idea of certain doom is doing to the world at large. The first of a trilogy; the next one is waiting for me at the library.

Just finished the audio book of "Countdown City," the second book of the Last Policeman trilogy.
With 3 months until the asteroid hits, society continues to crumble, and Hank Palace tries to track down a missing person as a favor to his old babysitter. It's heartbreaking to see Hank and others around him try to do right by one another, knowing that everything will end soon.

Good luck getting through DUNE, Ryan. I know there are fans but I couldn't finish ten pages before putting it down on several occasions.

I made it through DUNE but have no desire to revisit that universe with any of the sequels. The main thing I found interesting about it was how much George Lucas was obviously influenced by it for STAR WARS.
I read the 4th Barsoom book, Thuvia, Maid of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Fun, fun books!

More Craig Johnson. Just finished ANOTHER MAN'S MOCCASINS yesterday and I'm about halfway through THE DARK HORSE. Should be receiving the next book in his Walt Longmire series (JUNKYARD DOGS) in a few days.
Now I just have to carve some time into my schedule this month so I can catch season 2 of the LONGMIRE TV series on DVD for some serious binge watching.

I loaned my friend Sue a copy of CITY AT WORLD'S END, by Edmond Hamilton, which of course compelled me to read it again, even tho it has been only a few months since I last did so.Sue is one of the "normals" in my life (a middle school guidance councilor with degrees in psychology!), but I have lured her over to the "dark side" a few times. I introduced her to NuGALACTICA, for instance, and, as she put it, she immediately fell down that rabbit hole. Last night she called me to say she had finished CITY and LOVED it! We chatted for several minutes about the strengths of the book, Hamilton's skill at evoking people and places. And, especially, that despite the outrageous premise (a mid-Twentieth Century town is hurled millions of years into the Future), the story is very much about PEOPLE.

I just bought a collection of 16 titles* by Edmond Hamilton for the iPad based on you guys' comments here. I plan to start CITY AT WORLD'S END probably this weekend.
*I could have spent either $0.99 on CAWE or $0.99 for the collection. Hopefully, the other tales will be as good as I'm hoping CAWE will be.

Star Trek: Cold Equations Book 1 by David Mack. Mack is my favorite Trek writer. This begins the tale of Data's resurrection through the eyes of Noonian Soong.
