Hi JB,

I have a question about Northstar's powers. It has often been shown (after your run on AF) that Northstar can run at super speed. When you created him is that something you felt he should be able to do?

On a side note....I love your work. I was showing it to my 8 year old and he was just as blown away by it as I was and still am. Thank you for the many hours of entertainment your work has provided me with.

In my mind Northstar and Aurora could fly, and only fly, at super speed.

(And thanks!)

Thanks! It never made sense to me why writers would have him running. Why run at super speed when you can fly?

It's funny, but when I first read X-Men 121, I was left with the impression that Northstar and Aurora had slightly different powers. I thought Northstar could run fast, and Aurora could fly fast.

The first time we see Northstar in action, he's cold-cocking Cyclops from behind, and appears to be running. Immediately after that, Aurora takes off to evade Nightcrawler. Later in the issue, Northstar pulls the same trick on Storm, and is again clearly running. I walked away from that issue thinking that was all he could do.

One man's "clearly running" is another man's flying close to the ground.

There is exactly one panel in X-Men 121 where Northstar is unambiguously flying. The rest of the time he's doing stuff like this:

My mind saw a guy running. It was years before I figured out I was reading it wrong.

That was the best visor Cyclops ever had. I really miss that visor.

I really miss Cyclops.

Ugh, NO!  The first visor was perfection.

Agreed! As big a fan as I am of Cockrum costumes, I did not like ANYTHING he did with/to Cyclops.

JB, what were you favorite looks for Cyclops then, I wonder?

The original school uniform is Number One, and after that the "graduation" uniform, which was basically the school uniform minus the yellow on chest and back.

Perhaps it was easier with the yellow on his chest and back to render Cyclops still as he was originally conceived, namely, "Slim" Summers. Without that, just the bare black, maybe it was too tempting to beef him up?
