I did a quick ebay and google shopping search for that Wolverine piece. Couldn't find it, but that would be boss. I know JB didn't do the original artwork, but were I to drop some serious cash on a commission, I'd love to see his take on the old Uncanny X-Men page of Wolverine crucified to the X. In black and white? Forgetaboutit.

There were a couple of pages by Andy Kubert that were reasonably priced but at the time I couldn't afford them. They were up for sale for quite awhile but then one day *poof* gone. Curse my being fiscally responsible and not using my credit cards to get them!

Just like the Action #1/Detective #27 "race", this isn't about the actual piece in question. There's no way that page is "worth" $458,000. Rich people are just trying to inflate the value of things that they've become interested in.

DKR, Killing Joke and Watchmen have taken a life of their own in the comic art community. It is the ultimate status to have a page from one of those three. Looks like DKR has taken the lead in prestige. Good piece but, as JB states, it is sparse on actual artwork. There are many other pages from that series I would consider being more valuable. However, kudos to the seller and new owner.

I was just thinking the same thing, Paul. There are other pages that aren't even splashes that I would prefer to own. Frank Miller seems to be the hot artist in the high-end art market at the moment given how his DD cover for #188 sold recently.

This is hugely expensive compared to the normal metric of annual salaries, the cost of sports cars, houses etc, but what is so surprising is how expensive it is relative to other comparable pieces.
What does this do to the price of other DK splashes?
Given that the 'Spider-Man No More' splash is far more famous but sold for far, far less, are we to take this as a one-off aberration or as a precursor to widespread inflation in this form of artwork?
Curious.
By the by, for me, the finished page with Lynn Varley's colours is far more attractive than the sparse original.

I don't really know where to begin....
I totally agree with JB though.What was this person
thinking? I know it's a neat piece but it's not half a million
dollars neat!!! $1000.00 at most should be the ceiling on this.
Btw, if I had that kind of money sitting around there would fewer
Kirby,Simonson,Romita SR.,and Byrne pieces on the market!!!
Hell, really if I'm wishin' here I'd hire JB to do a mural on my wall or
at least design it :)
