Unfortunately, Radar reading comics was one of the many examples of what I do for a living being used as shorthand for "This Character is Immature and/or Not Very Bright."Note, also, the teddy bear.

In 1952 no less!! Talk about a time machine! *** Who knew his future "radar" extended to having comics that hadn't been published yet?

Unfortunately, Radar reading comics was one of the many examples of what I do for a living being used as shorthand for "This Character is Immature and/or Not Very Bright." Note, also, the teddy bear. *** Well, he was still practically a kid. Yet despite that image, the writers and producers managed to balance that out by showing him to be competant and intelligent where it mattered. He had a job that was almost as important as the doctors and nurses and he kept the 4077th running.

There were comics being read by prisoners in the HBO series THE WIRE, but I don't recall which ones exactly. I remember one was a SILVER SURFER.

Radar had a strange character arc. He went from a sharp, future seeing (hence his name) company clerk in the movie and early episodes of MASH to some kind of still competent company clerk, but naive Iowa farm boy when he left. It's like he reversed as he got more experience. I guess that's how the producers decided he'd go, but it's something I picked up on while watching the show. I liked the early Radar better.

Radar is absolutely supposed to be immature - that's a defining characteristic. He can keep the camp running administratively and he has a sixth sense, but he can't emotionally advance. He will someday, but he's not mature enough yet. He has no real romantic relationships, probably stunted by the hell he is trapped in. The juxtaposition between his immaturity and his ability to run the camp is what makes the character who he is.
The comic book and teddy bear are shorthand for innocence. Childlike innocence and immaturity. He's the kid of the group. And that is something they wanted to say about war. They wanted to show kids exposed to all the violence and death of war.
