But anywhere else, my usual approach is to think to myself I'm sure the creators of this character didn't intend him/her to be lame, so what did they intend?

Like you and Roger Stern's brilliant "correction" of Aquaman in the JLA arc a few years ago. I was so happy to see that. That Aquaman was no joke, but you also didn't have to resort to silly adjustments like harpoon hands to make him seem serious. You just played the character straight, which was perfect.

SHE-HULK herself was drawn SENSATIONALY,but as a nerdy guy,I wanted to see the lesser seen villains used competently and with style.Incidently, the was never a let down.

Yet one of many reasons why we love you JB! I used to get so disheartened when I read recent Marvel stuff showing a favourite villain of mine being used as cannon fodder for Wolverine or the Punisher and nothing else.

In fact, part of the fun, part of the challenge, is to take a "lame" villain and do something worthwhile with him/her. Look what Frank Miller did with Bullseye, for instance. A truly lame "gimmick" villain, more properly at home in the pages of THE FLASH, and Frank turned him into a major player.

When you took the assignment, did you consider playing SHE-HULK straight, JB?

When Mark Gruenwald asked me to start a new She-Hulk title, the first thing he said was "Make it different!" It took about half a second for me to decided "different" would mean she knew she was in a comic book, and would break the "fourth wall" on many occasions.

Ok. I ask because even though She-Hulk DID break the fourth wall in that very first ad, I expected something more in the vein of...say, Namor.

I've never understood why so many consider MODOK a "lame" character.

He's the leader of a powerful oranization and he really hasn't done much to warrant the title of "lame". Good news is that in the last few years the character has been given a bit more respect by fans.

I guess this is due to the increase in exposure the character has been given.

Might have something to do with him being blowed up real good about a page and a half after his introduction, in that first story!

Ha. Well there is that.  As Red Skull would attest, that up aganist Captain America many wouldn't fare much better.

Truly wished Kirby would have drawn more of MODOK, and would have loved to see him appear in his last Captain America run.  However, we did get Arnim Zola, so I can't complain that much.

MODOK fell down and was unable to get up on this JB drawn cover.

The signatures on that cover are in a little white oval, and there's a line in the floor tiles that sort of "points" from that oval toward MODOK's mouth.  It almost looks like MODOK is "saying" the art credits.
