The art is great, it feels heavy reading the comic. I hope this doesn't come off as creepy, I have no clue why, but I had a dream about this issue and it explained to me who Sam was, I didn't get it on reading. And I like the pairing with what I think is a new colorist? Seems like there's much more contrast between hues or I like the palettes anyway.

I'm never let down by John Byrne's creativity, nor the care and respect he has for the craft. DON'T EVER LET HIM STOP!!!

For me, Next Men is Byrne's masterpiece. Out of all his other masterpieces this one that just stands above the rest. I am not even sure why. It just feels like it to me. Honestly, when I read an issue it is a nail-biting page turner. Just exciting as all heck. The original was like this for me - pure excitement. When the series came back, despite all of us being older (groan), at first I could not believe it was coming back and then the issues had the same excitement but only more so. I could not wait to see what happened each issue and then wanted the next one right away. There is so much in Next Men. The science fiction is like Pedro said: a classic vibe. An anything can happen feel.

"Anything can happen" is very much the hinge upon which turns this partcular "chapter" of the story. So much so, in fact, that I sometime have to remind myself not to get TOO crazy!

The cover reminded me of Dave Johnson's covers on 100 Bullets. --- Hmmm... I'm a fan of Dave Johnson's cover work, but I don't get that. (By the way, do you follow his cover critique blog, Stephen?)

I forgot to mention that there is a typo on page 14 or 15 (I forget which). I just remember catching it last night.

Just a side question, JB... I am very tempted to go with the download version on my iPad because I have a hard time to consider waiting next week for this issue ( flight delays for Hong Kong delivery). So if I start with a download, I will probably continue with it for this round. But there is one small question popping up in my mind. If I buy a digital version, as opposed to printed, is it damaging the way IDW sees the success of the book, or do you receive less money? For you current, which buyer is more profitable: the printed single issue buyer, the trade paperback one or the digital one ?

Great issue. So much going on. Loved the little stopover in 1975.

When I went to the comic shop last night, there was a loud JB NEXT MEN discussion happening. As any good citizen would do, I immediately started eavesdropping. They were so loud I couldn't avoid it. What is it about us nerds that we can't modulate our voices? I'm guilty of this as well. Or should I say, I'M GUILTY OF THIS AS WELL!!!
One guy was asking another guy (maybe one of the employees?) why AFTERMATH was numbered at 40. The employee gave a good explanation on the numbering -- and the questioner thought it was "cool". Then a general discussion about the book and the printing history. Between the two of them, they cobbled together a reasonable facsimile of the printing history.
Then talk turned to WHIPPING BOY (because it featured "NEXT MEN characters") and DANGER UNLIMITED -- they liked each. It was good to hear such a positive discussion in a comic shop. I've never overheard a JB discussion before.
