Never seen this ad before. Sal explained in the TwoMorrows book that he had an actual ROM for reference, and it was "somewhere" in storage. I wonder if Sal realizes he's sitting on some bucks for this thing?

Chad: Also, I really enjoyed the way Sal drew ROM's eye energy sort of creating energy "smoke" when he moved his head.
----
It's interesting to see what different artists did with ROM's eyes.
Let's start with the toy...
Sal looked at the glowing eyes of the toy and really pushed what he saw...

Ditko was much more literal drawing the glowing-eyed model...

This is interesting... I found a pic of the unpublished original ROM #1 cover.
Shooter rejected it and the artist, Michael Netzer, ripped it up in anger.

Frank Miller must have looked at Netzer's pose for the published cover...

The first version of the cover was by Al Milgrom. It was printed as a pin-up in issue 3.
It's better than the Miller one. To me at least (and to Al). Although I'm not sure where the logo would have gone.
So there ya go... Milgrom, Netzer, Miller. Took Shooter 3 tries to get a cover, because the Milgrom one was just so gosh darn wrong.
whatever.

I like Miller's best. It's the clearest read (imho).

Shooter rejected it and the artist, Michael Netzer, ripped it up in anger.•• As you can see from the other two, the cover was supposed to show humans recoiling in horror as Rom appeared in their midst. Netzer disagreed, and also planted a self-portrait dead center. So Shooter rejected the drawing.

Netzer disagreed... how crazy! It's not like the guy was writing or drawing the book. What a nut.
