Surely he was one of the greatest living illustrators, whose work now belongs to the ages.  Also, sad to say, Moebius was one of a dying breed.

Send my sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues.  While I never did have any of his best-known work that got published over here Stateside, his was one of the first names in comicbook art to become recognizeable for me.  We'll never get another one like him.

A Godlike being.

A met him in Naples in 2007, every kid in the house was rushing to meet Steve Niven at Marvel booth, and there he stood, at a desk looking around, nobody even noticing him.

We talked some 15 minutes, and he left me with some of the kindest, most relieving and soothing words I'd ever heard...

He had an aura around him that simply calmed you down. It was like talking to the dad you'd always wished you had had.

Now, as I read this, my legs are shaking...

à bientôt monsieur.

Ugh.  Sad news.  I loved Moebius.  Heavy Metal and graphic novels.  Pictures spoke more than words.  David Finch could take a lesson from Moebius' art.

Moebius was always one of those almost mythical people who I never really knew much about but found his work amazing. I discovered his work in Heavy Metal when I was a teen. Some friends and I would read it and feel like we were somehow more mature, more grown up, but we were probably mostly checking out the nude drawings. But his work was among the best in the magazine and I remember being fascinated with it. I also liked Richard Corben, Pepe Moreno, and others but it was Moebius that clued my young mind to the fact that there were many great comic illustrators outside of the U.S.

RIP

1975. I discovered the work of Jean Giraud with this book from the school library. I got glued to it. Still am.

Still in a state of shock about the passing of such comics master, but what an amazingly productive life.

For those asking about good Moebius book to read I can recommend the new Incal collection from Self Made Hero. Although slightly smaller than the Epic version it does have the original colouring (in Europe the volumes have been recoloured on computer) and is a a great showcase of Jean Giraud's boundless imagination.
