DC has gay characters. The article makes it sound like "Man, we
need to get some gay characters for diversity. We're not representing".
This is a stunt because Marvel finally took back the no.1 spot.

It's bad enough that I feel I can only pick up non-continuity comics
from DC at this moment in time. If they make either Batman Or Robin
gay I'll never pick up an issue again nor will I let my kids read such
dribble. It would be less of a stretch that a woman who grew up on an
island of nothing but women being lesbian actually makes more
sense, despite the cliche. The thought of creating drama due to what
some consider a humorous or no-brainer of an idea is just too sad of
an situation for me to support with my wallet. Besides it should be a
non issue as these should be ALL AGES books!

"I've never heard "Ginger" as a word for gay man before."

Very old-fashioned rhyming slang. There's actually been a joke referring to it in Doctor Who, in the Agatha Christie episode: when the Doctor's been poisoned and is eating and drinking everything in sight as an antidote, he grabs a manservant (who's been shown as quietly closeted) and yells "Ginger beer!"

I only know it to mean red hair and freckles. Again on DOCTOR WHO
when David Tennant took over as the Doctor, he hadn't seen his face
yet and asked, "Am I Ginger, I've never been Ginger before."
I assumed he was referring to red hair and freckles.

Well, there never has been a red-haired Doctor.

Just create a brand new character, make them interesting and use them wisely. I guess that must be too hard to do though...

Been there, done that with Marvel in their New X-Men: Academy X series of the past decade.  They took a "revealed-to-be-gay" character in Karma (of the 1980s New Mutants title), made her a homeroom teacher for a group that included one gay student, and promptly dropped them into limbo in the wake of the "Decimation" storyline.

I expect that this fad will also pass.

I've been so busy that I have not read any comics from the "New 52" universe. But "outing" prominent characters is getting old and boring.

Phil Jimenez, out and open about his homosexuality, posted an idea on FB, stating that Kyle Gardner, being a single artist, would have possibilities. He did point out Kyle's previous heterosexuality in the previous DCU, but stated that it would certainly fit into a new universe.

I was reminded of accepting an administration position at a small, private college and learning, after being there for a few months, that there were rumors of my sexuality. This was being speculated on due to my prvious time spent in NYC and involved in acting, being in my mid-30's and single. When asked about this, I intentionally gave non-answers.

Heh. Oops... Kyle Rayner. The character had tons of potential and there were moments that writers produced some solid stories with him. Here's hoping that whoever and however they move forward with this, it is done well on all levels.
