When the Joker had the skin of his face removed and nailed to a wall

That is beyond bad taste, disgusting!

Well now he has it strapped back on like a mask so he looks like himself again.

I suspect that one of the results of Joker's face-peel will be that he now has scars and looks a lot more like Heath Ledger as the Joker. (hope I'm wrong about this)

When I was young I thought it would be great to work in the comics industry.
I used to be envious of those that 'broke in' because they create stories about Superheroes all day long, but the inter-personal work stuff sucks there too, it seems.

I can't help but wonder if the end of the industry is indeed right around the corner...

I don't see comics ever ending. Even if DC and Marvel coming crashing down. Someone will self publish.

@ Anthony:

That's true.  So long as there is some interest out there, comics will still be produced.  It might not be on newsstands and in bookstore shelves, but somewhere they'll have an artist plunking down a drawing on a piece of paper or using a digital tablet to create the whole thing in cyberspace.*

What saddens me is that the sort of people that the Chief has called out for years are now in charge of some of the titles that we used to enjoy so much, and that they've taken those characters and turned them into ciphers for whatever whim has crossed their mind.  Hence the Joker turning into Leatherface on everybody.

* Webcomics seem to be going along nicely, but are still a near-schizophrenic jumble of different tastes, very few of which seem to be well done and interesting enough for me to want to follow beyond an occasional glimpse.  Like myself, many of the creators of webcomics are actually ordinary folks who're moonlighting as comicbook artists, enjoying it as a hobby rather than working on it for a living.  If I had the self-discipline of some of those who've continued doing it for years, I'd have entered the fray long before now.

I personally feel that comics would be better off if DC and the company formally known as Marvel did go out of business. Just to think of those characters being in public domain and different people owning the rights to some others fills me with glee.

Oh trust me, you don't want that either. As it stands now, it's only an
"elite" club who get to do fan fiction with these characters. Imagine
what would happen if everybody tried to do it. It's going to take some
of the old guard taking up EIC and Editor positions, that they don't
want, to right the ship.

While I completely agree that Liefeld's approach to this, as well as
Snyder and Brevoort even bothering to respond, show an incredible
amount of unprofessionalism, something is very wrong at DC. Rob's
not the first to complain. If it was just him, I'd scream sour grapes.
But, others have mentioned the lack of direction from management as
well. It seems the Co-Publishers and Chief Creative Officer, seem to
have problems getting there editorial team on the same page. The
impression I get is that the three of them are like the dog from UP-
"Squirrel!"

I'm also curious as to whether the three of them are allowing Bob
Harras to do his job.

Robert E. Howard wrote a Conan story called "Rogues in the House". In it, a man-ape usurps his master, puts on his master's clothes and prances around the throne pretending he's the replacement. He ends up destroying all his master's things and has to be killed by Conan.

For a while now, that story feels like a portrait of Marvel and DC -- the apes who sit at the controls want everyone to know they're sitting where the Gods used to sit... "Rogues in the House of Ideas (and the distiguished competition)".

Elite is a part of the problem.  Not that Spider-Man would be in public domain but if it were. Then anyone could tell stories.
