Oh I agree Anthony. "Elite" is the problem. Because it's an "Elite"
group of FANS. The only thing that truly makes them "ELITE" is there
ability to pass themselves off as pros. But,at least they're all in a
couple of places. Public Domain would just make it a mess. Sure there
would be good stories out there. But separating the wheat from the
chaff For each character would become impossible. What it needs to
be is a group of true PROFESSIONALS. Sadly, outside of Liefeld's
potty mouth rant, it sounds like at DC, the talent is actually more
professional than a good chunk of the management.

In some ways it's a case of "be careful what you wish for". Many a time I would say, in times gone by, that comics, especially superhero comics, might be better served if they were being done by people who DIDN'T CARE. More of the Old School, where it was a job, and just a job, and, sure, you did the best you could at that job, but it was still JUST A JOB.

Unfortunately, the wrong gods were listening when I voiced this opinion, so in many a case today we DO have people who DON'T CARE -- but for them, that means they have a license to destroy.

When you bring up the point of public domain, think "Hercules".  For years, I've been aware of the original myths in whatever form they've been handed down to us over the centuries, the 1960s cartoon which saw reruns on VHF channels during my childhood years, the Marvel Comics character, the character published in a minor comicbook company during the 1970s, and many versions of the character who appeared in feature films and on television series.  Imagine the confusion for us if Spider-Man were to end up like this.

It would end up being yet another reason for some of us to wail, "Who are you, and what have you done to our Spider-Man?"

As one who bought AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 1 new off the stands, I have been wailing that for about forty years!!

I look at it this way public domain SPIDER-MAN

John Byrne does SPIDER-MAN

Joe Quesada does SPIDER-MAN

The cream rises to the top
The other grows roses
Which one is a steaming pile of crap?
Thats the beauty of it someone will be doing it the way it should be.
If it's JB or Alex Ross or Neal Adams or all three.

If DC & Marvel stopped publishing today and closed their doors forever, their characters still wouldn't be in the public domain, the parent companies of Warner Brothers and Disney would still own the rights.

It makes me think of when I started reading comics. I didn't know who made them. Not the name of the artists, writers, colourists etc. Obviously I knew someone was taking the effort of making them, and sometimes I'd have opinions about the product, but it just didn't seem to matter who they were. When I picked up a SUPERMAN book, I knew what to expect - and usually got it.

Simpler times.

Speaking of comic book professionals...

Yesterday evening, Cully Hamner, Jerry Ordway and Gail Simone had a neat
Twitter exchange regarding the different ways in which artists and writers
work together on books. At one point, Ms. Simone mentioned that JB
"amazed" her with his storytelling, and that he added "so much" to her
scripts. Mr. Ordway opined that, "Byrne has great instincts to what is
needed," and also said that he "loved working with him as co-plotter on
Superman." Mr. Hamner called JB a "pro" who knows his stuff. (He actually
used a different word, but...) Erik Larsen also chimed in, saying how he liked
the way JB wrote the Hulk while Ron Garney was the artist.

It was nice to see other comic book creators saying good things about my
favorite comic book creator.

Perhaps "Big Bad Byrne" is about to experience the same rehabilitation as "Jack the Hack"!!

Unfortunately, that doesn't always work. Sometimes what rises is the
stuff that appeals to the lowest common denominator.   Just look at
the music and movie industry.
