So if you had any say in letting Dr. Doom be loaned out to the Micronauts title, thank you. If not, thank you for your Fantastic Four work which got me to read super-hero comics regularly.•• Unfortunately, Doom's appearance in MICRONAUTS is an example of how easily things can get miscommunicated. Bill Mantlo, when he was writing MICRONAUTS, was constantly on the lookout for "small stuff" from the Marvel Universe that he could fold into his stories. So, of course, when he saw "Liddleville" in the FF 20th Anniversary issue, he was almost instantly on the phone to me, asking if he could use Doom and the tabletop town. "Oh, that would be cool," I said. "The Micronauts would seem to be GIANTS in Liddleville." "Well, no," said Bill. "I'd want them to think they were normal sized in a normal sized town." Seemed he'd missed the very important element of SCALE in my story -- the fact that Doom's little robots were only a fraction (a very small fraction) of the height of a 3" Micronaut. "I'd rather you didn't do it, then," I said. And I thought that was the end of it. But a few months later I walked into my LCS, and there was the latest issue of MICRONAUTS, containing the story as Bill had wanted to do it. I called Bill the moment I got home. "I asked you not to do that story," I said. "No," Bill said, "you said you'd RATHER I didn't do it. I didn't take that as a firm NO." Ah, well!!
